Tears flowed from my ruby eyes as I saw the last glimpse of wall Maria disappear from my sight. My fingers rubbed frantically against each other as I sat on the deck of the barge. There were people around me, but they were only faces. I could feel nothing but death. I could hear nothing but death. Even my own body felt like a corpse. I didn't want to think about what I had seen. I couldn't.
I felt my body quaking, fluttering erratically inside. It took a while before I realized that I was coughing. My father always coughed when he was nervous. Father…
I closed my eyes, but I couldn't see anything but blood on shining teeth. We were small and sickeningly weak. Were nothing compared to them.
"Aghhhhhh!"
My eyes popped open. A woman fell dramatically to her knees like she was struck by lightning. Rocking back and forth, she huddled on the deck. She moaned, clutching something to her chest. It was soiled little bundle, with traces of red around the fringes. My insides recoiled, shuffling instinctively away.
"She was alive when I left! She was alive- She was-"
The mother gagged on her own tears. The saddest thing was no one could manage to do anything for her. We had no sympathy left to give. So we just stared at her with our big glazed eyes. We weren't human anymore. We were just dumb animals.
I shuddered as another wave broke through body. A fit of tears swelled in my eyes. I began to grasp that I would never see any of my family again. My stomach began to do flips inside me. Why was I the one that lived? The gritty dirt on my face began to wash away with my tears, leaving streaky cheeks. The blur of destruction kept on replaying and replaying like I was hypnotized. Why was I left behind? My vision started spinning and fading in and out. The wooziness was getting worse; before I knew it my head hit the floor. My vision darkened, as I slipped away into unconsciousness.
