Ultimo ~ The Last

"And it is no wonder, for the devil himself masquerades as an angel of light."

In your unreadable, shining, lusting eyes

Still there is a blackness to hypnotize

As you lean in to receive the last breath.

Take what you will; take my death.

But in return, give me stillness, peace—

The place where the horrors will cease.

Give me your love.

(Together below rather than apart above.)

Your smooth, whispering lips, curved in delight,

The darkness in your smile I embraced with all my might—

If this is the last sight, then let that be.

(What a lovely thing I see before me.)

I have known visions so ghastly and raw,

That when set against memory's abiding law,

And history's bleeding, screaming, thrashing heart,

Your warm, soft, deadly hands seem almost gentle art.

Your devil's words, your angel's grace,

Your demon's horns, and your seraph's face,

The sound of your wings, the last echo of your voice—

I have never forgotten our promise, never strayed from my choice.

I have never run away, never lived in denial,

Never failed to kick against the revolting and the vile,

So please, my companion (both hell and heaven-sent)

In keeping with our covenant, fulfill the fate for which I'm meant.

These tender sorrows are my soul's last relief.

I fought that battle holding unyielding belief

That at the close, you would be deft, curt, and brief

In cutting me away from my life of grief.

And that conviction does not fail me now—

So sink to your knee in a last, deep bow,

And please grant me this:

Give me one last kiss.
