A/N: My friends on Figment had a contest with the prompt, "It was the one thing he coveted most," and I wrote several responses to it. Two (or actually three) of which ended up being Supernatural, which my friends wouldn't appreciate. Anyway, this is the one I wrote about Dean.
Disclaimer: All usual disclaimers, plus the added disclaimer of not using the word "covet" right, and so sloppily amending it at the end.
Amulet
It was the one thing he coveted most. It was small. It wasn't anything real special. To be quite honest, it was kind of ugly. But in that badass way that had his name all over it. Roguish beauty, or something. He didn't care what it looked like, though. Honestly, it could be porcelain doll head and he'd still wear it every day.
He remembers the Christmas his brother gave it to him. It was supposed to go to their dad, but he changed his mind, because, even though he promised, Dad was working on Christmas.
And with that -super badass- necklace, little brother not only gave him his trust and love and thanks, but also his admirations and completely innocent beleof that his bog brother was the best big brother in the world.
Which he totally was.
If he ever forgot that he loved his brother (which never happened), or that his brother still thought big brother was awesome, there was a familiar weight around his necki, resting on his chest that reminded him they would always be brothers.
He actually hates himself right now. What the hell was he thinking? His brother had made some mistakes. It wasn't his fault. Not really. Well, okay, it was, but his brother was human. It wasn't like HE hadn't made his own fair share of mistakes. Worse mistakes than his brother's at least. That didn't give him any right, not even in a moment of complete hopelessness, to throw the thing out. He may as well have disowned the poor kid. They were all they had left, and he threw it away. Quite literally. He threw away the amulet and with it his promise to always be there for his little brother. He didn't mean it. Honestly. But he couldn't take it back now, could he? He thought his greatest regret in life would be something dramatic, and he had plenty of those as well, but his biggest regret was a tiny little reaction he hardly even thought about. And he did it to get back at the brother he swore to protect no matter what. Each mile he drove, another two grew between them and he wished he could fix it. It was the one thing he most coveted.
