This is very sad...

Enjoy, I guess?

John Laurens laughed. He was having the time of his life! This was where he was meant to be. Leading his first-ever all-black battalion he'd fought so hard for, with his best friend, Alexander Hamilton, by his side.

And then he heard it.

"Laurens!" It was Alexander's voice.

Followed by a gunshot, and a sickening thump.

"Are you Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens?" Laurens paused his pacing.

"Yes. Is he breathing? Will he survive this?" Laurens demanded, his voice cracking on the last syllable.

"I won't lie, sir, it's looking bleak. He's begging to see you." the doctor replied, opening the flap to the medical tent.

Laurens took a deep breath before walking in.

What he saw hit him hard. His best friend, with the strongest never-give-up spirit he'd ever seen, laying down on a bed, looking so...so...defeated. Helpless.

"Alex..." Laurens breathed.

"L-Laurens..." Alexander stuttered. He drew a deep breath, grimacing slightly. "Listen. We both know

I-I'm not gonna...make it. Before I die, th-there's something you need to know. I'm...not who you think I am."

"What do you mean?" Laurens whispered.

"Ah...well...y'see...I'm a...uh...a girl?" Alexander mumbled.

Laurens couldn't believe his ears.

"Uhh, could you repeat that?" he asked.

"I'm a woman, Laurens. My real name is Alexandra, and...Before I die...just know that...that I've always loved you."

Laurens was half-convinced that either he or Alexander-Alexandra? was going crazy with the trauma. First of all, how could Alexandra have hidden her identity all these years? Wouldn't that be difficult?

Unless you're a bastard orphan nobody from the Caribbean, Laurens realized bitterly.

Second of all, Alexandra had loved him, too? Laurens had always had a completely secret, and also completely socially unacceptable, crush on Alexander-but if Alexander was a girl...

Laurens' head hurt. This whole ordeal was confusing and mentally scarring.

But then the realization hit him like a gunshot.

Alexandra was about to die.

And there was no stopping it.

"Alexander...Alexandra...please, stay alive..." Laurens whispered. He was already pouring out tears, against his own will.

"I...can't..." Alexandra struggled to get the words out. "Just-ugh." She grabbed the lapels of Laurens' jacket (with surprising strength for a woman on her deathbed) and yanked his mouth onto hers.

"I had to do that..." Alexandra mumbled when they broke apart. "Just...one last...time."

And like a flame that flickers out too soon, she died.

"She's...gone..."

Laurens let out a wail that could raise the dead.

But it didn't.

Told ya it was sad... ;_;
