Chapter One: Introductions
Leo Fitz was sitting in a room inside S.H.I.E.L.D Academy, typing on his laptop. He was so close to start building the robots. Seven tiny robots that could help him in a mission by scanning the surroundings or by helping him locate the thing he needs to find. Sipping his tea, he was beginning to add the finishing touches to his blueprint when someone knocked on the door and started opening it.
Fitz jumped up, spilling tea all over himself and slamming his knee on his desk. Grimacing in pain, he turned to look at his visitor and was shocked to find out it was a woman. She had a blue shirt and jeans on, making Fitz feel a little overdressed in his plaid buttondown shirt and black pants. Her face had blue eyes, like his, a button nose, and a small smile on her lips. She had brown hair that was tied back in a ponytail and looked at him kindly, if not a little surprised to find him covered in Earl Grey.
"Hi," she began with a pleasant British accent, "I'm Simmons, are you Fitz?"
"Um, yeah," Fitz responded, "that's my last name. First's Leo, but most people call me Fitz."
"Well, Fitz-" He liked the way she said his name. Her accent was cute, "-I've been assigned as your partner and roommate."
Fitz then noticed her suitcase and duffel bag next to her. He looked around his room. Clothes were on the floor, the desk was covered in papers, and his bed had a bunch of nuts and bolts on it. On the other bed-he didn't know he'd get a partner so soon-had a toolbox on it.
"Oh, ok. Sorry about the mess. I didn't know I'd get a partner so soon. Especially a woman. Not that there's anything wrong with a woman. They're pretty. Not that you're pretty...I mean you are, but.…" He stopped talking and started picking up the mess, red in the face. He glanced up at Simmons and saw she was trying not to giggle.
"Well, thank you," she said, picking up the toolbox and setting it on the floor, "that's very sweet."
He blushed harder. Simmons didn't know what to think of Fitz. She found him covered in tea and in pain, his room a mess, then he proceeded to call her pretty, denied it, said it again, and then start cleaning. Sure, he was cute, with his Scottish accent and curly hair, but she knew if they were going to be lab partners she couldn't start anything.
After cleaning up most of the floor, Fitz cleaned the papers off his bed and set them on the desk.
"Fitz, it's alright," Jemma said, putting her bags on her bed and grabbing a towel, "don't worry about it."
She started wiping the tea of his shirt. He stared at her.
"Is something wrong?" she asked.
Fitz didn't know what to say. Simmons was wiping his shirt off, staring at him intently. He wouldn't say it to her, but he kind of enjoyed it.
"No," he answered.
"So, Fitz," she began, still wiping his shirt off, "tell me about yourself."
How much should I say? Fitz wondered, Will she make fun of me?
"Well, I was born and raised in Scotland, went to school, mastered in engineering, and was contacted by S.H.I.E.L.D to work with them."
"Wow," she said with mock awe, "such descriptive details."
"Oh, shut it, Simmons."
They both laughed. Fitz liked her. She was fun, nice, and beautiful.
No, Fitz. You can't think like that.
"I assume you're in engineering?" she guessed.
"Yeah."
Uh oh. What if she's not in science. She won't understand anything I have to say. I would hate that.
"What are you in?" He asked nervously.
"Bio-chem."
Yes!
They spent most of the night talking about where they were from, how they got into S.H.I.E.L.D, and much more. Eventually, they both got sleepy and were getting prepared for bed.
"Goodnight, Fitz" Simmons said.
"Goodnight, Simmons," Fitz responded.
He lied down and was almost asleep when he heard her voice.
"Goodnight...Leo," she whispered.
