This is my first ever ficlet, well, -1000 words, and its quite DarkMerlin (Well, it's more like his darker self attempting to trick his good self into beliving that he is villainous at heart) so I'd love to hear your feedback :D.
Think of all the enemies you have vanquished, Merlin. Think of all those people and creatures you destroyed and defeated with your magic. Each month several more join the never-ending list of dead and marred, and you just keep going on, do you not? You are a being of the Old Religion, yet you will soon reach a point where you have ended more lives than saved. In your strong, resolute heart, you remind yourself that you do this to keep Arthur safe from harm, so your legendary, entwined destiny will be fulfilled. A golden era shall dawn, and Albion will be filled with light, prosperity, and eternal unity. Or will it?
You have been told of this great destiny by the Great Dragon, Kilgharrah. Yet you jump to believe him so quickly? Is he telling you the truth, or is he merely instructing you to do what he wishes? This destiny he speaks of may be the future that he hopes for. In the dark, rotting cavern beneath a great city, after twenty years, destiny surely loses it shine... its importance? His race had been wiped off the face of the earth, so what else does he have to live for, save freedom? He will tell you anything in order to escape from this dark corner of the Earth. Yet you believe in his talk of destiny so hastily. Even after he escapes, and rips apart the city he spoke of with such respect, you still believe him. Even now, you still believe him. Do you seek comfort in this prophecy, so it gives you a right to kill?
Then there are your seemingly constant enemies; the trio of darkness. Mordred, Morgana, and Morgause. They never seem to... die, do they? At first, you pitied the three, and attempted to help the witch use her powers for good... but of course, you were a coward. Even during her greatest time of need, when her gift was revealed to her, you couldn't confide in her your greatest secret. Now she has turned to a path of darkness, all friendships forgotten. Each time you see her, Merlin, remember, and remember well. You created this monster. You have created a destiny of your own, and it will be your mistakes which will be with you at the end.
Your name will resonate through the ages, and resound throughout the entire world, and beyond. Merlin the Wizard, Merlin the Sorcerer, Merlin the Conjurer, and, of course, Emrys. You will be admired and loved by many, and despised and hated by few. Remember, though, the faces of those you killed, exposed, tricked, deceived, trapped, despised, misunderstood and threw aside, and most importantly, remember their names. Mary Collins, Knight Valiant, Edwin Muirden, Sophia and Aulfric of Tír-Mòr, Tristan de Bois, Kanen, Tauren, Nimueh, Cornelius Sigan, Myror, Aglain, Hengist, Catrina, Aredian, Freya, and the list just goes on, and on, and on. Countless nameless beings, friends and foe alike, fall under your direct or inadvertent power, in the name of destiny. So many have died, are dying, and will die, in the name of your destiny, for the greater good. People die because you kill them. People die because you let other people live, and people will die for your despicable weakness. No, Merlin, no one will ever know your true name.
Merlin the Murderer.
