Greg climbed the roots that encircled his brother's waist.

"Wirt ?" he called shyly. No answer came.

" Hey…" he tried again, looking at his brother's face.

Wirt's face was a pale grey and not its usual pink tone. He had both of his arms over his head, maintained to the three by powerful branch. Wirt had his eyes closed, was he sleeping ?

"Wirt! Wake up!" he whispered, afraid that the Monster, The Beast that was around here would hear him. "We gotta get out of here ! There's scary things happening and the beast is gonna…"

crack crack crack

He never finished his sentence, for small cracks began to form on his brother's face. Tears began to gather in his eyes and he started to shake as new cracks could be heard.

He desperately tried to ignore the truth that was piercing his heart.

Wirt was becoming a tree.

He hugged the unmoving body of the only family he had in those woods, tears now rolling freely down his cheeks and his shaking getting worse.

"Come on…" he whined. "We gotta go home bro…" and he never called Wirt bro.

"You said we'd do it together…together…" he sobbed "You can't just fall asleep now !"

And certainly not for an eternal one ! he wanted to shout

"Beatrice needs to… And Jason Hunder-Burger…" he didn't even know what he wanted to say. He just wished for his dear brother to wake up, to wake up now and help him through this, to help him getting out of those damned woods.

He closed his eyes, tears now flowing. He hugged his brother tighter, wishing that it was all a nightmare.

"I'm….I'm scared." he cried. "I'm scared…I don't know what to do without you here to tell me…" he sobbed against Wirt's chest, and it suddenly hit him:

He couldn't feel his brother heartbeat.

He gripped Wirt's cloak so hard that his knuckles went white, and sobbed even harder, not even caring about his teapot-like hat which was falling to the ground.

"Stop it….Please….." he cried as the world around his seemed to fall down. Nothing mattered anymore. The only thing that mattered was that Wirt, his brother, was dead. DEAD !

He failed to notice the two eyes that shone behind him in the dark.

The Beast was here.
