As soon as the rings transported the Colonel and Teal'c away, Sam's head whipped around to look squarely at Daniel. "We missed you at Janet's,"
"I know – sorry. But remember, you and I agreed that arriving at separate times was for the best," he replied. "You know how perceptive Cassie is; she would have caught on straight away."
"And you, Daniel, should know that just because her evening was cut short, doesn't mean you're off the hook."
"Of course not," he chuckled softly, closing the small space between their bodies. "Tell me, Sam, how can I make it up to you?"
She guided his head down toward hers and whispered, "kissing me would be a start."
He readily obliged, cradling her face while their lips moved in unison. Soon the kiss intensified until the fire wasn't their only source of warmth.
Sam pulled away to catch her breath and Daniel settled for nuzzling her neck, sending shivers down her spine. "We should probably catch up with the others," she reasoned, her heart pounding.
He grinned. "Probably?"
"Definitely – and especially before they start suspecting anything," she murmured, silently fighting against desire and duty. "Once Cassie gets better, you can pay for your lateness properly."
He touched the green handprint a second time. "Don't mind if I do…you're even more beautiful when you're blushing, Sam."
She felt her flushed cheeks in mortification. "Oh, god! – what are the others going to think?"
"Just tell them you were standing too close to the fire," Daniel suggestively teased, as the rings materialised to carry them from the forest.
Sam blushed again despite herself. She couldn't wait for that fire to be stoked, but for now it was back to the mission.
