Katie's POV
I was walking through the cool, soggy forest at midnight, sometime in early spring. I was a little bit stressed out because of all the work I had to do as head counselor of the Demeter cabin.
I trudged on a little bit farther, just trying to relax and keep my brain free of thoughts. I suddenly felt a pair of strong arms wrap around my waist. Travis Stoll, I thought. Travis happens to be my boyfriend. He also is a son of Hermes, the god of thieves and travelers.
"Hey," I whispered.
"Hey Katie," he replied in the same tone, "What are you doing out here?"
I turned to face him, "I could ask you the same thing…"
"I asked you first,"
"But I want to know why YOU'RE out here,"
He sighed and gave in, "I couldn't sleep, how about you?"
"Neither could I."
Travis smirked, probably remembering the last time we found each other in the woods at midnight. We both couldn't sleep that night either. That night was when we had our first kiss, and probably the best night of my life.
He led me over to a long, sturdy log and sat down. I sat down next to him and laid my head on his shoulder. Travis put his arms around me in that comfortable and protective way that I love so much. After about five minutes of silence, I decided I was too ADHD to handle this.
"Travis?" I asked.
"Hm?"
"Do you actually want to do something or just sit here all night?"
"You want to play 20 questions?"
"Sure," I said. We've played this game a lot ever since my friend, Abby, daughter of Aphrodite, broke up with her boyfriend because of how little they actually knew about each other. It got me thinking about how little I actually knew about Travis, and I didn't want it breaking us apart. So, this is our way of learning stuff about each other.
"I'll go first, what's your favorite camp activity?" he asked me. We always started off with the basics.
"The climbing wall. If you weren't a son of Hermes, who would be your Olympian parent?"
"Nike. If you could leave camp for the school year, where would you go?"
"Montana. You?"
"Where ever you are," Aaaaaawwww… that's so sweet… I thought. I just sat and looked at him for a while, as he stared out at sea. I observed the way his eyebrows scrunched up when he was contemplating what to say next. The way he had his arm around me so tightly, as if he was afraid of losing me.
I smiled and cupped my hands around his face, "Travis?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
He stared into my eyes, trying to find out if I really meant it. He smiled. "I love you too, Katie."
Then he closed the small gap between us and kissed me. Yep, this was the best game of 20 questions I had ever played.
