A Day at the Beach
"Wow, look at all that water!" Mahad gazed out at the vast expanse of liquid ahead of him. It appeared to span for miles, stretching until it touched a range of hazy peaks in the distance. The shore was covered by dirty coloured sand, but that did little to diminish the joy of the pirates at finding such a huge, untouched water resource.
Well, most of the pirates.
"All this water… and the Sphere haven't touched it?" grumbled Cortes. "There must be something wrong with it…"
"Come on! The Sphere hardly ever comes out here!" said Mahad, rolling his eyes. "They just haven't found it yet…"
"It's a little hard to miss…" said Cortes. "Mahad! What are you doing?!"
Mahad had walked down to the shore, jumped back as a small wave nearly crashed over his feet, and then, overcoming that small fear, knelt down and dipped the throat of his water bottle into the water. "Don't worry; I'm only going to taste it…"
Cortes huffed. "Don't come crying to me if you get indigestion…"
"Perhaps just wait until we test it," suggested the Vector. He had also knelt at the water's edge, but rather than trying to drink any he had dipped a small probe attached to a hand held computer into it. "Well…" he said, after the computer had let out a high pitched chirp, "there's nothing wrong with it, but…"
"But?" pressed Cortes.
"Well, good," said Mahad. He took a swig from his water bottle, filling his cheeks. Then he made a face, and spat most of the water back out again. "Yuck! It tastes foul!"
"That's because it's salt water," said the Vector.
"Great," muttered Cortes. "I knew it."
"But…" said Mahad, looking at his water bottle again, "you said there was nothing wrong with it… I'm thirsty as… and we really need it, don't we?" He glared at the water bottle again, then forced himself to take another swig, and swallowed it.
The Vector looked at Cortes, waiting for him to say something, but Cortes was just watching Mahad. "You can't drink salt water, Mahad," the Vector eventually said.
"Why not?"
"Because it's got too much salt in it," explained Cortes. "If you drink it you'll die…"
Mahad's eyes went wide. "Oh no, I swallowed some! What do I do!? What do I do!?" Mahad had started to panic. "Should I throw it up; how far is the nearest hospital?!" The boy stuck a finger down his throat and started to cough.
"Mahad…" the Vector tried.
Mahad ignored him, spat in the sand, and then ran back up towards the Saint Nazaire, yelling something about the first aid kit.
"Cortes that was horrible!" said the Vector, turning on the Captain.
Cortes frowned. "Wait, what…?"
"Telling him he was going to die, he doesn't know any better. He's probably never seen an ocean in his life!"
"Hey, wait… I didn't…" Cortes wasn't happy with his motives being called into question. "It's true! If you drink salt water, you'll die!"
"Well, perhaps if you drink a lot…"
"That's what I meant!"
Suddenly, there was a high pitched scream from a short distance up the beach. The Vector and Cortes turned to see Cheng running around frantically, and Lena looking shocked.
"He picked up this thing in a shell and then accidentally dropped it down his pants!" Lena shouted at the two men's stunned expressions. "I think it bit him…"
Cortes sighed. "Cheng… hang on lad…" he headed up the beach towards Cheng.
"I've got sand in my shoes…" grumbled Wayan, walking down to stand beside the Vector.
Dahlia joined him, also wanting to watch the spectacle of their Captain trying to grab a hold of the frantic Cheng. He wasn't having much luck. "You don't want to know where I've got sand…" she muttered.
