The first time Dad leaves, he cries. Branches toss in the wind, rain spatters like bullets against the roof, and he's frightened. Sammy cries, too. It feels like the whole world is crying.
The second time, he stares at the twisting shadows and grips Sam's baby fist with a tear-wet hand.
The third time, he pretends he doesn't cry. Sam knows better.
The fourth time, he doesn't cry.
The fifth time, he grips Dad's old knife (the only one his fingers can fit around) because he has to protect Sammy. He forgets to cry.
After that, he stops counting.
