Melissa walked towards house number 42 on Pineleaf Drive. She had been traveling all over the world with Jonathon and Jessica, and finally she was back home in Bixby.

While she was gone apparently Rex had moved, and it was about time. His dad had died last year while she was gone and he had gotten a job at the local museum.

Rex was 25 now, same with Melissa, and he had a job now, which apparently gave him more money than she expected because he had been able to get his own house.

It had been so long since she had seen him, and he had probably changed a lot, but the e-mails he sent to her always had a trace of his old self. He would talk about his job, some new exhibits they had, if they had any traces of midnight, new midnighters (and how he was in charge of his own group), and about how he missed her.

Melissa stopped in front of house number 42. It was humongous.

How'd he ever afford a place like this?

Melissa walked up the steps to Rex's new house. Telling people about museum exhibits couldn't pay that much, could it?

Rex's dad hadn't left him anything after he died, as far as Melissa knew.

Melissa rang the doorbell.

Nobody answered.

Melissa reached out with her mind. She could sense Rex in the backyard, and Dess. Melissa's smile downed a bit. Oh well, we'll get time together alone later. I don't have anyplace to stay, and I'm sure Rex has an extra room in this big place.

Melissa walked around to the side of the house and quietly opened the gate. Everything was quiet about her ever since her trip, not that she was loud before, but when approaching midnighters it was usually best not to yell out; "Welcome to the secret hour!"

Melissa quickly backed up against the wall as she heard a laugh.

Melissa stuck her head out around the corner. Rex and Dess were lying beside each other on the grass, near a nice pool, and Rex had his arms around Dess's waste. He was tickling her.

"Stop! Rex! It tickles!"

Rex stopped tickling her and they lay together in the grass, his arms around her, staring up at the white, cloudy sky.

Melissa couldn't keep her eyes off of them. She was looking at their arms, their faces, their eyes, and them in general. Why was Rex hugging her? He had never mentioned there was anything between them in any e-mails he had sent her.

Then Melissa noticed the ring that each of them wore.

That's why he had never mentioned her, he didn't want her to be upset. That's why he never mentioned what the house was like, because he knew she would be suspicious. Dess was probably bathing in money, and she was how he got his house. No, their house.

They were together now. Married.

They're together now, and they don't want me in their lives. Rex doesn't want me in his life.

A single tear slipped down Melissa's face.

Maybe… going to a motel wouldn't be too bad afterall.
