I couldn't help myself! ^_^ I took a detour from Visions & MU for this little story. But I promise I'm working on both...don't own, just love!
Capturing the Sunset
by Mei
In the autumn's fading light, a young child is at play.
Four-year old Jamie Waite played in peace, alone and free. He joyfully chased the falling leaves of golden, crimson, and orange hues around the backyard. Once they twirled and fell onto the ground, he gathered them up and leaped into each pile he made. He also rolled all over the ground, Every now and then he took a moment to sit and watch the horizon. Only briefly, of course, because his mother had told him it could be dangerous to gaze at the burning ball in the sky.
The blinding sun was setting in Kingsport. Jamie stirred in blissful delight, awed by its magnificence. Light purple and pinks streaked across, yellow and orange could be found closest to the sun, and soft blue swept over the background. Jamie sighed, wishing he could capture the beauty on a piece of paper so that his parents wouldn't miss out. He knew that his mother was typing away in her home office and his father at a meeting with some big companies. 'I wish Mommy and Daddy could see too' he thought, for the third time that week.
He had confided this grief to his mother on the first day, and earlier she had secretly solved the problem.
Before Jamie headed back to his room in the brick house, he noticed a gleam in the orchids. Pushing past the powerful roots and branches, he found a case of shiny paints and a box of white paper. His mom smiled at the look of rapture on his face as he opened it carefully. He alternated from concentrating on the sun and streaking colors all over the paper.
Soon the shimmering slivers of the porch lantern were the only light available. Dark blues and blacks invaded the sky, overwhelming the once pretty atmosphere. Jamie put the last touches to his project and was about to run into the house with his triumph when a car entered the driveway.
Mrs. Waite left her window seat, emerged from her home office, and dashed to greet her husband.
Mr. Waite pushed the car door back in place. Mrs. Waite kissed him on the cheek softly. Jamie barreled into his father, holding up his picture. "For you and Mommy, Daddy!" He smiled lopsidedly, dimples showing from both sides of his face.
The original Jamie Waite examined the picture and chuckled. "You captured the sunset perfectly, Jamie. I'll hang it up in my office for everyone to see."
Caitie Waite giggled and placed an arm around her husband, "Very true. You could be an artist someday, son!"
"Daddy, Mommy...I love you."
Jamie and Caitie answered in unison, "We love you too."
