A/N: Written for the Death Note Flash Bingo on the For Death Note Writers Forum (link in profile), number #051 – "Philosophy is life's dry-nurse, who can take care of us - but not suckle us." Soren Kierkegaard. This time it's L's turn.
Right and Wrong
There were some answers that L simply did not have. Answers that couldn't be dug out of books or a reasonable mind, that relied on a heart he had long since locked away, and that screamed against every ounce of rationality he possessed.
He knew the world wasn't a utopia, and could never be made to become one. He knew that such things as "good" and "evil" were a child's dream. He knew his reasons for fighting the world crime were selfish, and best – because anyone who thought themselves responsible for the world would either crumble into dust or inflate until they burst.
Like Kira, whom L only fought because he was interested. Because Kira could near-match L, and L did not like being matched. But whether things would have been different if L hadn't been L was a question he couldn't answer. If he hadn't been irked and willing to dive into a cat-fight with Kira, would he consider the man criminal? If he didn't respect that intellect, couldn't help but be thrilled and a little disappointed that they'd never be on the same side…
But he knew well enough that black and white were simply colours, and nothing more. And the idea of right and wrong had never mattered to him before.
