The class was quite as everyone continued to take notes of their Honors English afternoon class that carried into yet another hour. Around the back of the class an uninterested Wendy Harris tried to focus as she studied her notes. From behind her came a low whisper, "Hey, Wendy?"
At the sound of his voice her heart suddenly jumped, she hadn't realized he was sitting behind her.
"Conner," she said sheepishly, "When did you come in?"
He had his notebook scattered across his table and it looked like he was having a hard time deciding what exactly to take notes on. It was the start of the summer courses and after not having seen him show up she had begun to wonder if he had decided to drop the course. "Uh somewhere in the middle of his 'Shakespeare-still-lives-on-today' speech."
"Ah, boy does the man love Shakespeare," Wendy replied.
Conner nodded. There was that awkward silence again. This always seemed to happen whenever they would run into each other, or when she tried to cheer him up whenever she saw him looking down. Except this time he was the one who had wanted to start up a conversation with her.
"Um."
It seemed like he was unsure of what he wanted to say exactly. "Conner?" Wendy said looking right at him, "Is there something you wanted to say?"
He cleared his throat and rubbed his hand around his neck; she was a psychology major and from what it looked like it appeared as if he was, blushing?
"I, um, wanted to ask –"
She smiled, "Go on,"
"The — um, project," he managed to exclaim finally, "Do you think you'd um—"
Wendy couldn't help the smirk forming on her face, she chuckled, "are you asking if I could be your partner?"
Conner's face suddenly went from blushing pink to bright red. "Well I —"
From the front of the room came the professor's firm voice, "Quiet back there,"
"Sorry." Wendy turned her direction to the front trying to apologize to no one in particular.
As the class carried on she went back to facing Conner. His face was calm now as he whispered back, "Yea I am." And she just couldn't help the grin on her face. "Will you?"
"Sure."
Conner then returned her smile, "How about we meet up at Bilbo's later – well after class. It's a –"
He cut himself a hint of shyness on his expression. "Yea, Conner," Wendy laughed, It's a date."
With that he sent a real smile her way, and she turned her attention back to the lecture, counting the seconds until the class ended. Conner was unsure whether he should have come at all knowing the team had only just made it back but he was tired of denying it. There stood a chance before him and he wanted to take it. A date with Wendy – there was no hiding the smile on his face.
