Title: The Girl Who Lived

Rating: T

Summary: We all know the story of Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived. But what if Voldemort had decided to attack another place, a business, on Halloween and not the Potter? What if that business belonged to the Grangers? And what if, like with Lily, a mother's sacrifice had ended the war. The big problem is; where will Hermione Granger go? Warning: Harry and friends bashing.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of Rowling's characters and I'm making nothing from this.

Chapter 1

The Ministry of Magic was having its hands full with the war against Voldemort. He had risen to power and gained followers. Followers that wanted to purify the Wizarding world of anyone that was, at least, a half-blood. Muggles, or non-magical people, had suffered the most at the hands of Voldemort and his Death Eaters and nothing seem to be able to defeat him. Voldemort had started to develop a taste of killing large group of muggles.

On Halloween he decided to go at it alone at a dentist office. No one knows why he chose the Granger business but that would prove to be a fatal mistake for him and a blessing for all that fought for those that had died at his hands. He had gone alone, killing those that were waiting to get seen before the big Halloween rush. Mr. Granger was another to fall and then he entered the small room, Mrs. Granger screaming when she saw Voldemort's face.

"I think that I'll kill your filthy muggle child," he said, "Stand aside!"

"No, you're not killing her," she said. "What has she done to you?"

"She's breathing," Voldemort answered.

"No, kill me instead," she begged, "Please, spare Hermione."

"Stand aside, you stupid woman, stand aside."

"No," she said and Voldemort cast his killing curse on her.

She was dead before she hit the ground. Voldemort laughed and then approached the child that was now crying. "Be silent you stupid pile of filth. Just like my father, a defenseless nothing." He raised his wand and cast the same spell that had brought down fully grown witches and wizards. Suddenly the spell rebounded on him and he felt his soul ripping from his body. A scar formed on the girl's forehead and Voldemort's powers were broken.

Voldemort had finally been defeated.

Dumbledore, the Order, and Aurors arrived to find everyone dead. Dumbledore shook his head and then they heard crying. Finding the body of Voldemort was shocking; next to him was the body of a woman. The crying, it turned out, belonged to a baby. James picked the child up and said, "She's got a scar on her forehead."

"Come on, we need to get out of here," Dumbledore told them. "We meet back at Hogwarts."

Everyone agreed and they all left.

Everyone was celebrating the downfall of Voldemort, no more Death Eaters, no more people being killed, and no more death. The girl had a name on her clothes which read 'Hermione Granger.' She was a strange child and one that no one knew what to do with.

"How could a muggle defeat the Dark Lord?" Snape asked.

"I don't know," Dumbledore said. "Is her name on the roll?"

McGonagall shook her head.

"Well you're not shipping her off," Lily Potter told them. "She's the-Girl-Who-Lived and she's going to need to be raised by a Wizarding family. For her protection."

"And what do you know about raising a muggle child?"

"Sirius Black, so help me I'm going to hex you," she snarled. "Muggle children are no different than Wizarding children. Yes, they have magic, but they all need the same thing. Love, clothes, attention, and food."

"I agree," Dumbledore said, "Hermione Granger would be in grave danger if she was left with others. Death Eaters are still out there, looking for their lost lord. She can be adopted by the Potter's."

"Oh Harry's going to love being a brother," Lily said, smiling at the baby. "And I want to make Severus her godfather."

"What, no way."

"Excuse me, James, but I'm the one that decides," Lily said, glaring at her husband.

"Fine," he muttered.

"Trust Lily to get what she wants," Dumbledore told everyone.

They didn't miss the look that Lily gave Snape. Snape said, "I'll be honored."

The years went by with Hermione showing no signs of magic. Harry and she turned out to be very close, making sure that she wasn't excluded from things. The only damage that it seemed that Hermione was suffering was the nightmares that were from that night. It seemed that she did remember a short bit of what happened.

"We can't give her dreamless sleep," James told Lily. "It will poison her."

Lily nodded and left Hermione alone.

Harry soon had his own friends, the Weasley's, and he spent more time at the Burrow then at home. Lily saw that this hurt Hermione, not being able to play with Harry anymore. Everyone was talking about what house they knew that Harry would be in. Hermione was going to a muggle school in the village and would be moving on with her life as a muggle student. And then something strange happened one night.

Mrs. Weasley asked Lily if Harry could spend the night at the Burrow. Lily told her that he could and then cut the connection. Lily turned and saw that Hermione was in tears, again. She sighed and said, "Hermione, I know that Harry doesn't play with you anymore but that doesn't mean that he doesn't love you."

"He doesn't want to hang out with me because I'm a muggle," Hermione cried out. "I lost my parents and all that stuff to some madman and he just ignores me."

Lily tried to comfort her but suddenly all the dishes in the kitchen broke. Lily raced into the kitchen to find all the dishes were now shattered. A side door opened and James, Sirius, and Remus all entered.

"What's going on and why is Hermione crying?" Remus asked.

"She overheard that Harry wants to spend the night with the Weasley's," she said. "Strange thing was that all the dishes broke."

A tapping on the window made Lily jump and she saw that it was Severus.

"Guys, her crying stopped," Remus told them.

Lily, thinking nothing of it, opened the window. "YOU'VE GOT A BLOODY PANTHER IN YOUR LIVING ROOM AND WHERE'S HERMIONE AT?"

"PANTHER!" they all said at the same time and slowly opened the door.

In the middle of the room was a huge panther and the only thing that James brought with him was a chair.

"Oh great," Lily said, "Remind me to ask you, James, what you're thinking?"

"Hermione's gone," Sirius said.

"Guys, that is Hermione," Remus told them. "The smell is the same."

"I don't believe it, Hermione is a witch!" James said and then they bolted back to the kitchen as the panther Hermione decided that it was dinnertime.

The news that Hermione Granger was a witch was all over the Daily Prophet, no idea how that had happened. Everyone stared to pay attention to her, which didn't sit well with Lily. She grumbled about them never paying attention to the child in the first place.

"This is the problem with people," she said to Snape, "They weren't interested in her when they thought she was a muggle but now she's a witch, and suddenly she's interesting."

"Don't look to me for answers, I just breathe air."

"Dumbledore said that it was the stress of not being paid attention to that caused her to have that bad case of accidental magic," Lily went on. "I just hope that Harry hasn't damaged her. We don't need another Tom Riddle around."

"Don't worry, I'll keep her out of trouble," Snape promised.

"That's why I chose you as her godfather," Lily said.

After that moment the Potter's were always worrying about Hermione. It turned out that she was a natural animagi and they didn't know what animal that she would turn into. Was the bird outside Hermione, was Hermione flying over the Burrow. When they could see her it wasn't always a guarantee that she was staying out of trouble. Another thing that Lily noticed was that Hermione was brilliant at Potions. Severus brought her a Potions kit and Hermione was able to do all the potions that were inside to perfection.

One thing was for certain. Hermione wouldn't be famous only for the fact that she had defeated Voldemort. She just might be famous based on what she was going to offer. That was Lily's hope.

A/N: Hermione has now been discovered to be a witch. So this story, everyone, is about Hermione being the Girl-Who-Lived, having extra ordinary powers, and trying to understand the whole 'fame' thing. Of course her relationship with Harry has been damaged by the shear fact that he didn't want to play with her but would rather play with the Weasley kids because they are magical and it was believed that she wasn't. Oh and I'm not going to place her in Gryffindor, if anyone wants to know. Enjoy the rest of the story and reviews would be lovely.
