The thin, silver chain dangled in Remus's hand gently, its shimmering parts catching the sun and glistening- casting its shadows on the hardwood floor and mirror. The charm hung loosely over the side of his hand, catching the majority of the light and casting the largest and prettiest glow in the room. A shadow of the charm itself- a small, inscribed locket that bore the monogrammed: 'nLr' to stand for both Tonks and his initials, and their last name- shown in a larger proportion than it really was against the floor.

She was going to fall absolutely in love with it. Never once had he purchased her jewelry, but since she was pregnant with their first child, he wanted so badly to make her feel more special than he ever had. He was wining and dining her, buying her the best little things he could pick up for the baby, and helping with as many chores as possible when it wasn't the week leading up to or after a Full Moon.

But this- this was something different. He had saved for this for quite some time, and he knew it was perfect for her.

It didn't take long for her to walk through the front door- large workout bag in hand and in a tight, stretchy get-up that Muggles wore for fitness routines that drove Remus absolutely insane. She quite usually whined about looking like a beached whale, but he quickly assuaged her fears: she was nothing but beautiful to him, and he was sure she knew it.

"How was class, love?"

"Why did I sign up?" She groaned.

It must have been a rough day, which was perfect. The gift would make her smile, and that's all Remus could ever want to do.

"Because we agreed that Lamaze Classes would help you prepare for having the baby. You're the one that wants it like a regular, Muggle childbirth, darling."

She just shook her head and fell down onto the couch.

"Hey," he began, taking a seat next to her and sliding his arm around her shoulders. "I have something that will make you feel better."

Her eyes brightened slightly as she looked at him with anticipation.

"You do?"

"I do," he responded, pulling the necklace from the pocket he had slid it into quickly when she opened the front door. "Close your eyes."

She did as she was told and he gently placed the chain over her open hands, resting the charm in one of her palms.

"Open."

Her eyes widened incredibly and she gasped quietly as she stared down at the piece of jewelry she was cradling.

"Remus, this is beautiful."

"Only the best for you, sweetheart."

She stared at him, tears spilling over her eyes.

"How could you afford this? Is this real-"

"-Silver? Yes."

"But how could you-"

"-Hold it?"

She nodded quickly.

"It will only hurt me if it pierces my skin, but that is the ultimate sacrifice isn't it? Holding this tiny fraction of silver that could potentially end my life, because I love you. I love you with an eternal love," he pulled her hair back and slipped the necklace from her hands, moving to rest it around her neck. "And that will never change. Even beyond death."
