It was Monday morning. The morning of a holiday Monday, to be exact, and it couldn't have been more lovely. The birds were singing, the sky was a strong, clear shade of soft blue, and the air was wonderfully warm. Children were playing, adults were chatting, and as the golden sun shone on everyone's face, their smiles told the world how glad they were to be alive. The people of Angeles Bay were having the time of their life. Except the ones who were working! Young medic, saviour of mankind and superdoctor extraordinaire Derek Stiles was one of these people. Having quite forgotten that he wasn't getting a day off the following morning, he had been at his friend Tyler's flat last night, watching TV, playing videogames, eating Ben & Jerry's ice cream, and having a laugh. Now, however, he was paying the price. Come the next morning, he was at his place of work, Caduceus USA, slumped over the desk in the office that he shared with his nurse Angie. A large pile of paperwork in front of him, his tiredness was not helped by the sunny day, and as his pen dropped from his hand and he fell asleep, all he could think about was how much he needed coffee...
He had barely slept two minutes when the door was carefully opened. In entered his nurse, and best friend, Angie Thompson, carrying a large cup of coffee.
"Derek, I just came in to see how you were doing, I brought you some coffee..." Angie's voice trailed off as she noticed that Derek was asleep yet again, using several important documents and a copy of Nintendo Power as a pillow. She would have just left him there, but she was supposed to keep him in line, and besides, he had paperwork to do! A small smirk played at the nurse's lips as she placed the coffee down on the desk, took a deep breath, and:
"DOCTOR STILES!!"
Derek awoke in a flash, to see his assistant standing over him, hands on hips and glaring. Immediately, he involuntarily adopted an expression akin to a rabbit caught in a car's headlights.
"A-Angie!" he stammered, clearly speechless. Angie's frown melted.
"I brought you some coffee." She handed over the hot, caffeinated beverage. Shakily, Derek muttered his thanks and picked up his pen.
"Willing it to write isn't going to help anything," She sighed. "I know you don't want to work, Doctor, but you've got to keep it together! Your holiday starts tomorrow, then you can relax!"
"How do you think they'll manage without us?" asked Derek sleepily. Angie sighed once more, then giggled. "I think that judging by your current performance, they'll manage just fine!"
"Ouch..."
Suddenly, Derek had a thought.
"Hey, Angie..."
She spun round. "Yes?"
Derek went pink. "Uh, nothing. Just forget about it, okay?"
"What was it?" Angie asked inquisitively.
"It wasn't important..." Derek stammered.
"Dr. Stiles..."
"Fine! I was going to ask if you wanted to go to the Jade Garden tonight, as a celebration of not having to work for the rest of the week!"
Now it was Angie's turn to go pink.
"I'd love to... Derek."
And, in true SmileyDudette style, she doesn't finish it. Or write more than 540 words. This was supposed to be about twenty times the size of it. But it's not. I'm sorry about the rubbishness. Please review anyway. :)
Also, I need to write something. Please someone give me a request! Maybe I'll actually write something if someone's waiting for it. Please?
