Mathieu looked around, biting his lip as he squinted into the flashing lights of the carnival. He had to leave soon, and with each second that passed his watch grew heavier and heavier.
Damn it, Mathieu thought, bouncing on his feet. Where is he?
Alfred had promised that he'd cut off early from his job at the carnival (his camp group he was counseling was sponsoring this to get donations) to say good bye. The blonde American was nowhere in sight. Mathieu's eyes unwillingly stung as he realized he'd have to leave without a farewell to his boyfriend of two years.
"Stop it," Mathieu murmured to himself. "It's only three days without him. There have been times when you haven't seen him for months. It's not the end of the world."
Oh but it was. If he didn't see Alfred once more bouncing around, laughing freely at his favorite job, Mathieu was sure his heart would melt. Kids passed by, giggling and holding giant mounds of cotton candy.
With a sigh, the Canadian checked his watch and swallowed the lump in his throat. 6:30 PM. He had to leave now if he wanted to catch his flight to his job interview.
"Bye, Alfred," Mathieu waved glumly at the noisy fun-house before turning, heading to leave.
"Matt, wait!" A familiar voice cried out and Mathieu wheeled around, grinning widely when he saw Alfred jogging up to him. All of his hair and the top half of his shirt were soaked, and Mathieu had a feeling he gave some "examples" of how to properly bob for apples. He was also carrying a large polar bear.
"Al!" Mathieu exclaimed as he was thrown into a hug so strong it nearly knocked him off his feet.
"Sorry it took me a while; the kiddies were having too much fun trying to splash me," Alfred explained as he squeezed his boyfriend tighter.

"That's fine," Mathieu said as they pulled apart and gently kissed. "I have to go now, though."
"Can you just wait one more minute?" Alfred pleaded, giving Matt his signature sad puppy-dog eyes.
"Maybe, but it has to be fast," Mathieu said, immune to his boyfriend's charms from much practice.
"Alright. Fast. Got it," Alfred said, looking suddenly nervous. He patted his sides before reaching in his pocket, looking around. Mathieu was about to ask what he was doing before Alfred sank down on one knee, holding the polar bear in one arm and an engagement ring in another.
The Canadian gasped.
"I know that this isn't really romantic," Alfred smirked, gesturing to his surroundings, "but I figured it'd be excusable seeing as you're the one rushing me."—Alfred winked—"Mathieu, I love you. And I'd be more than honored to spend the rest of my life by your side. I'd say a bunch more cheesy crap but you've already heard it and I have maybe forty seconds left. All I'm trying to say is that I wanna get married. So, what do you say, Matt?"
Mathieu smiled, a tear trickling out of his eye. Though it wasn't the most romantic—and being part French Mathieu adored romance—it was absolutely something only Alfred would do. And that made Mathieu happier than ever.
"Yes, of course," Matt said and crouched down to kiss his new fiancé.
