Colonel Young's Pass-the-Salt Moment

A Pass-the-Salt Moment*: A psychological phenomenon in which one hides or tries to hide their negative emotions from another. However, at any particular moment, said feelings burst unexpectedly through and create a 'pass-the-salt' moment.

Colonel Young, Dr. Rush, and a few other crewmembers were sitting down to a nice quiet dinner, after a nice quiet day. Only a week ago, they had been attacked by those nasty-looking blue aliens, and now things had mainly gone back to normal. Occasionally, Chloe could be found rocking herself to sleep in a corner, but as I said...everything was normal.

Colonel Young was having the fake potatoes, Rush was having the fake potatoes, and everyone else was having the...you know...beef stroganoff. Anywho, they were chatting and talking and generally having a good time. Except for Rush, who was sulking at his food...as usual.

Slowly, the scientist turned to the colonel and stared at him out of the corner of his eye.

"Colonel, could you pass the salt, please?" he asked. He wasn't trying to start anything; he actually wanted some salt on his potatoes.

Young burst out of his seat with a strangled cry, making everyone jump. "I HATE YOU!" he screamed at Rush. With that, he ran away from the table, sobbing hysterically.

Once everyone had recovered from their shock, they turned to stare at Rush. Everyone except for Rush, of course, because he couldn't turn to stare at himself.

*I heard this term in a Rachel Simmons lecture. So, it belongs to her, I guess. :P
