JIE-JIE

For once River's brother Simon and Kaylee were talking plesantly and it sounded like he wasn't headed for his typical foot-in-mouth moment. Part of her really didn't want to disturb them. Unfortunately it wasn't the part of her brain that the alliance had messed with which made holding in her emotions basically impossible. She skipped toward the pair who were opposite each other leaning on the railing when she reached them she wrapped her arms around Kaylee's waist and snuggled her head on the mechanic's shoulder.
"Jie-Jie" she cried with a big smile.
Kaylee smiled down fondly at the girl and put an arm around River's shoulders.
"Hi, Sweetie" Kaylee said giving the girl a gentle kiss on top of her head, much like Mal would do with her.
"River," Simon said softly but with an edge of annoyance to his tone. "Kaylee isn't your Jie-Jie"
Simon became aware of how bad he screwed up when River turned her face into Kaylee's shoulder and started whimpering. Kaylee's normally warm eyes were shooting daggers at him. Kaylee brought her other arm around River and rested her cheek on top of the younger girl's head.
"Oh Mei-Mei, don't cry. Mean old Simon don't know what he's sayin'. Of course I'm your Jie-Jie." Stroking River's hair she continued to give the young doctor a death glare.
"You are such a boob." She mouthed at him and led the girl away. Not for the first time, Simon began to wonder if the alliance had not altered the part of his brain that controlled his mouth.
A/N Just a little scene that played out in my head. I'm not sure if it'll really go anywhere. Translations are reasonably accurate but still rough
