He watched as Jill's expression shifted from terrified to ashamed and then apologetic. So she'd failed again.
Still, she was making progress. She was trying. Across the camp, Jill lowered her gaze as the thing she had been talking to lashed out with that cat's tongue of hers, sharp with the trademark accent he could not stand. From Jill's smile, though, he knew that the cat's words must have been those of acceptance—hidden somewhere in the sub-human's toxic vehemence.
Of course, it was the most logical thing to do, having positive rapport with one's allies. But he couldn't bring himself to be near her—much less socialize. Though he generally ignored everyone, so perhaps…
No. How silly.
They could tell anyway. Or rather, they could tell something was wrong. But even Ike could not fathom what thoughts had been occupying his mind of late, and it was those thoughts that festered like sickness, fed on his uncertainties. Eventually, it was all going to come flooding out and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
"Is something afflicting you, sage?" the sub-human growled as she passed. He realized he'd been staring.
"Humans like you are the reason the world is the way it is."
And she was right.
