A/N: This is the prequel to 'Meetings' I said I might post, this chapter's fairly short but the entire fic will definitely be a few chappys long. If there's any problems with the characterization or anything else don't hesitate to point it out. Next chapter's probably going to be from Kaito's POV

It was quite a nice evening Takagi mused as he looked out of the window; it was a shame that he was stuck inside the Kuroba's home for the night. Sometimes he just wished he could actually say no to people instead of always going along with what they said, his parents seemed to think that he would benefit from 'socialising with non-police officers for once' as if he didn't talk to anyone else or something, the Detective Boys counted, right? So here he was, roped into standing around for hours in a stranger's home while Sato-san and the others were at the movies.

The house was interesting from what he'd seen so far, there weren't many places he'd been to that had full sized portraits dotted around everywhere. Though Takagi personally thought that the people who lived in the house were much more intriguing, he still hadn't quite figured out how his parents with their fairly average personalities got along with the weirdness that was Kuroba Chikage and Kaito.

A loud bang from behind made him nearly drop his cup of hot chocolate as he visibly jumped. Turning quickly around the officer tried to slow his heartbeat back down to a normal level as he realised it was only Kaito playing with what looked like a pack of exploding cubes. The teenager seemed bored, although how you could be bored when handling dangerous materials he didn't know, probably a magician thing.

As if feeling his gaze Kaito glanced up, the first sign of acknowledgement he had given him since he had entered the house (according to his mum he was just sulking because he couldn't go to his friends house). Takagi nervously cleared his throat, while attempting to figure out how to start a conversation. It was at this point he realised exactly how bad he was at socialising, Ayumi can do this better than me, he thought, and at that moment in time he was right.

The silence stretched onwards as the two stared at each other, or rather Takagi stared at Kaito and Kaito started to juggle the cubes while wondering if he could sneak round to Aoko's for a while.

Fortunately the awkwardness of the moment was broken by Akane Takagi entering the room, she was wearing an apron and had a pleased expression on her face.

"The food's nearly ready now, you can-"she broke off, an excited look coming over her face "wow... Kaito-kun where did you learn to do that?"

Kaito stopped juggling before shrugging his shoulders "I taught myself" he said "there were plenty of instructions lying around from when..." he coughed and continued "from tousan"

"Oh, of course, Toichi-kun did love his magic. Anyway, as I was saying before: food's ready" and with that she marched back down the hallway "C'mon you two" she called.
