"Oh come on Trey we have a tradition here. We size up all these canidates here and we bet on who's going to make it first!" Jules exclaimed. The girl could be a bit stubborn sometimes and this was one of those times. "You're trying to figure that out Jules, I've got a friend to run with that won't shut up!" The blonde shook her head and sighed her eyes still on the recruits in front of her. She turned to Trey now and stared her friend right in the eye. "The guy with the glasses on" she said with a smirk on her face. She was always doing this with Trey. They were total opposites which made them great friends. He reminded her of Bones and she was pretty sure everybody thought of her like the female Jim Kirk in the Star Trek universe.
"If that guy wasn't on the cross country team, I'll eat my hat." Jules grinned at her friend. Trey was smirking now as he shook his head. "You're not wearing a hat princess." And then Jules laughed, a melodic sound that attracted every man on base. And she should have been interested in at least one of them, but it seemed as though none of them were ever good enough for her. She had her eye on someone else. Someone who she was sure that probably would never like her back in that way. It saddened her, but she tried not to think about it. So she always distracted herself with other things like running and betting on people.
"I own a hat..." She started to explain when a voice called to her. "Jules!"
Jules whipped her head around to find her friend Jason's wife waving at her. Alex and Jules were best friends now since Jason was overseas so much. The two girls got lonely. Jules not having anybody and Alex's husband always being deployed somewhere. It had made them closer and as far as Jules was concerned, Alex was her only female friend.
"Listen Trey I have to go" she said, standing up. "I'll catch up with you." The blonde turned and raced to her best friend.
"What's wrong?" she instantly knew the pain on Alex's face and she felt sick. Something was wrong, but she just didn't know what. Jules sat down on the bench and glanced over at her friend. "Alex tell me!"
The darker haired woman sighed and closed her eyes for a minute. "Jules..Jason was stabbed by one of his own men."
That sentence alone sent her reeling. How could one of her best friends be dead? She had only just seen him a week ago."What?" She was on the verge of tears now. Angry tears. "By who?" she growled, her voice shaking. Alex sighed and wiped her own eyes. "An enlisted man. Ian Morehead."
Tears were now falling down Juliet's face. She was so angry and sad now that she couldn't control herself. Alex, Jason and Jules had been friends for years. When Jules took her bullet and was told she couldn't be infantry again, Jason had helped her find her job at JAG headquarters. He had brought her back to life and she wouldn't be lying if she said that she had some kind of attraction to him, but she could never do that to Alex. They were all best friends and they had been that way since day one.
"I want you to handle the case Jules. I want you to put this guy away." Alex said firmly and angrily. The only thing the two girls wanted now was justice for their friend and they would get it.
Jules had a habit of being late for everything and she hated it. She wanted people to rely on her and yet she always turned up late for a staff meeting. But today she had a legit excuse. Today her best friend had died and her world had been turned upside down. She had left Alex, feeling numb and out of it. It had taken her an hour to compose herself and get dressed for work. Luckily that was normal for her.
"Good morning Captain Abraham" Rami said as she walked out of the elevator. He was about to say the time and their mandate, but today the blonde put her hand to stop him from saying another word. "I'm aware Mr. Ahmadi of both the time and our mandate." Jules smiled thinly before walking past him. As she reached the room where Major Turnbull was holding their staff meeting, she wiped her eyes and quickly opened the door. Thank god she wasn't wearing any make-up that day.
It was silent for a moment as she spoke. "I would like to talk about the death of Jason Hunt." She was breaking all the rules here, but sometimes she didn't care about the rules. And today was one of those days. "He personally helped me when I took my bullet. Got me back on my feet and turned into one of the best friends I have ever had. I recommend we bring the accused to Quantico for court martial."
Colonel Turnbull looked at her for a few short minutes before motioning to Trey. "I have given the assignmet to Major Ferry" Now Jules knew she had to fight. "Colonel I have all the respect for Major Ferry and the rest of the talent in this room, but in light of the unique circumstances..." She was then interrupted by Colonel Turnbull. "Unique circumstances is why you're not getting the case. They don't need a 'buddy' in court. They need a lawyer."
"Ma'am, they need me and they asked for me" Jules said with all the determination she could muster. "And with due respect to the talent in this room, I cannot sit out on Jason's murder trial."
The colonel looked at Jules for a moment before turning to Trey. "Major would you be willing to accept co-counsel?" Trey immediately nodded. "Of course." If anything he knew how much Alex and Jason meant to Jules. They would both make sure that the man who killed Jason was behind bars.
"Now does anyone object to us continuing our staff meeting?" Colonel Turnbull asked as she reopened her notebook.
"Actually ma'am...apologies" Jules said softly as she looked down at her hat that she was twirling around in her hands. "Jason is coming home today and I want to be there." Colonel Turnbull looked at the younger girl for a minute before nodding.
"Carry on." Jules nodded and walked back out the door. She hoped she wouldn't cry during the whole thing. She hated crying and Jason would have wanted her to be strong. And that is exactly what she would be.
