"Hey, Scott! Do you have the worksheets I asked you to copy for me?" Ororo asked, looking a bit flustered as she practically ran into my office.
I smiled at the weather witch, "On the front desk there."
Relief flooded her exotic features, "I owe you...again."
We both laughed and I replied, "Maybe if you'd slow down once in a while and take a breath, you wouldn't owe me so much."
Her smile fell from her face, "There's just too much to do and not enough time to do it in. I don't know how you, Jean, or especially Charles manage to get all of this done."
"That's the secret," I lowered my voice to a whisper. "We don't."
"What do you mean?"
I sighed, "Life is supposed to feel like there's too much to do. There's always going to be, but there's only so much you can do. Jean's the one who told me that. I always thought I knew, but I really didn't."
"Jean's good at giving anyone who will listen a life lesson," now it was her turn to sigh. "Guess I should start listening to her more often now, huh?"
I stood up and came around to the other side of the desk, "Remember how when I first met Jean, we hated each other?"
"How could I forget? Warren, Hank, and I had bets going as to how long it would take you to kill each other!" she laughed, the sound making my stomach flutter.
"Do you know what made me love her?"
Ororo looked up into my eyes, the same way Jean does every day, "The obnoxious amount of sexual tension between you?"
"...Okay, I'll admit there was a lot of that, but I was more thinking of when I actually started listening to people. I started thinking that I might not know everything just yet, and I was right."
She lifted her hand to cup my left cheek, "Do you remember...forget it."
Ororo dropped her hand and began to walk away, "Ororo!"
"Yeah?"
I kissed the crown of her head, "Regardless of what you believe, I actually do remember that night."
She groaned, "Damn! I was hoping you'd forgotten."
Shock ran threw my body, "Why? It's neither of our faults we made out. Blame the alcohol Warren was pumping into us all night!"
"Wait! You remember...and you don't hate me?"
I laughed, "Why? Because we admitted that at one point we'd both had a crush on each other? 'Ro, I could never hate you for that! We grew up!"
Ororo paused for a long time before asking, "Does Jean know?"
"Yes, she knows. She saw it happen, so she wasn't too happy with either of us at first, but then she realized that it was really no ones fault and I still loved her more than anyone."
Ororo gave me a smile that lit up her face, "You two are so great together, but I swear on my life if you ever-"
"hurt her you'll hurt me? That time has come and gone, my friend."
"When were you planning on giving her the ring you keep in your desk?" She asked with a smirk.
I didn't dare ask how she knew the ring was there, "Soon. Even though we're practically already married, I thought it was about time we start making it official."
"Good. Thanks for the chat and the worksheets, Scott."
"Anytime!" I shouted at the closing door.
With a smile only a good friend can put on your face, I walked back to my desk and glanced at the clock, waiting for my next class to come in. I loved Jean with all of my heart and that would never change. Thank goodness she knew that, and was patient enough to understand that sometimes the best friendships are ones that could have potentially been something more, but never got the chance.
I don't know which weird crevice of my brain this fic crawled out of, but I thought I would write it while on my way back from grocery shopping with my mom. I feel a lot of the different forms of X-men media (save from the comics, of course) don't really show the friendship between many of the characters. I just wanted to represent that in my own messed up way.
