"We're under attack! Evacuate the facility and dial Earth!" yelled Colonel Young as an explosion shook the compound. The sergeant at the DHD immediately began dialing the gate. Once he had finished, Dr. Rush came running up to the DHD and connected console.
"Sir, please explain yourself," said the sergeant in a flat voice. Dr. Rush began to type into the console, ignoring the sergeant.
"Please back away from the console, sir!" he yelled, with some anger in his voice. Rush appeared to hesitate, but moved toward the DHD.
"Dr. Rush, get away from the DHD!" There was more anger and something else in his voice now. Rush did hesitate this time, his hand now hovering over the center of the DHD.
The sergeant cocked his rifle. "Move away from the DHD, NOW!" he yelled, his voice now both hostile and angry. An explosion rocked the base, causing Rush to sway on his feet. Already angry and scared, the sergeant thought Rush was going for the DHD and fired a 3-round burst toward the scientist's head. It missed, one bullet going through the throat and severing the jugular vein, one smashing the jaw, the last missing completely.
As the limp body fell to the ground, Young arrived with a group of base personnel. "What the hell happened?" he demanded.
"Real sorry, sir. He tried to do something with the gate. I think I convinced him to stop, but there was an explosion, I panicked and fired a three-round burst into his head."
"You had your orders, sergeant," sighed Colonel Young. He didn't really like Rush, but he didn't want him dead. Another explosion rocked the base, the ceiling beginning to crumble under the impacts. "Everyone through the gate now! Sergeant, just drag the body! There'll be time for pleasantries later!"
The sergeant did as he was told, Rush's body leaving a trail of blood on the floor. Shortly after the gate shut down for the last time, the entire planet exploded in a colossal fireball. Dr. Nicholas Rush's dream had died with him.
