The kiss in the room
It was late. Dr. Temperance Brennan sat in her office and double checked an x-ray of a skeleton they found earlier this day, just to be sure that they didn't make any mistakes. As the perfectionist Brennan is, there weren't any mistakes to find. She took a deep breath. Today had been a long day for them all. Four skeletons in total, all of them children at age three. It was harder with children. Everyone knew that. Everyone felt that. So the examinations of the skeletons went much more in silent than it usually went with adult skeletons. All of the children had been found within two to five blocks from where she was sitting right now, they thought it was a new serial killer. That sent a chill down her spine when she thought of it. The serial killer felt so close. She took a look at her clock, 1 am, while Booth came walking into her office.
'Hi Bones! Everyone of the squints are leaving now, and you should too, it's been a long day.'
Brennan nodded, confirmed that she agreed. Booth was standing in the doorway in his black dress, as he always used.
'You're right.' She looked down at the x-rays she had just doubled checked.
Booth walked towards her, so eventually he was standing next to the big black chair she was sitting in. He laid a hand on her shoulder. Suddenly she felt a little bit better. But just a little bit.
'It's gonna be alright you know, we're gonna catch that serial killer, you know that, and he is gonna get the punishment he deserves. Of course it would be better if we could bring those children back, but...'
More didn't he say, because Brennan had laid her hand on top of his in that moment he had said 'but'. Now Booth felt a little bit better. Just a little bit though. Brennan turned around so they both looked each other strait into each other eyes. They both felt a connection to each other, an indescribable connection, one that made them feel stronger. Better. And closer to each other than ever before.
'It's getting very late now and we better be going now, so we don't feel asleep while driving.' Booth broke the silence.
'You're right' Brennan agreed and started walking towards the room to turn off the light in her office. Booth was right behind her. She turned around, and suddenly, out of nowhere, they kissed. A kiss that didn't last longer then a few seconds. It was almost over before it had began. Though it was a soft kiss, that both of them had enjoyed, they now were standing face to face, shocked by the little kiss.
'No.' Brennan said and started walking out of the door, leaving Booth behind in her office. She couldn't believe what had just happened, and she needed fresh air so she could think clear. A lot of fresh air.
