Chapter 1

Mi Sono Dimenticato

"Tony?!" the short Italian girl shouted when Racetrack walked into the bakery with a few other newsies.

Racetrack hadn't been expecting that. It had been a couple months since the strike, and all was going well for Racetrack. Winter was coming, and he was content, no one knew about his former life, and now, with one stupid decision to let David pick the place to eat, it was all going down hill.

"So, we're gonna eat, right?" David asked. His stomach growled. Jack, Mush, Race, and the infamous Spot Conlon who was up for a visit laughed.

"Shoah, Davey, yoah choice." Jack said with a laugh.

"Yeah, jist pick someplace we all's can affoahd." Race said, checking to see if David was listening. He was. David punched him on the arm, and grinned.

"Let's go tah that French Bakery on 9th," David said, and Racetrack Higgins hadn't realized that it would be the end of his life as he knew it.

The short Italian girl was behind the counter when the boys walked in, laughing about some dumb mistake David had the idiocy to make, again. She turned around, and Racetrack stopped.

"Tony?!" she shouted, shocked.

The other three boys turned to stare at the shell-shocked Racetrack. He opened and closed his mouth several times, unsure of what to say. The girl looked just like him, dark brown curly hair, and the same nose shape, but on her, it looked better. But her eyes, they weren't the same. Her eyes were a deep cerulean blue.

Racetrack gaped some more. She was just a bit younger than the seventeen year old…around sixteen and she seemed to recognize him, as all the boys noticed. Racetrack finally grew his voice.

"Sophia?! Sophia…is dat you?" Racetrack asked. He was suddenly scared. He'd thought all of….this…had been forgotten a long time ago.
