The world spun around Ben as he stared across the room on his bed.
Eyes red from tears, his insides were tender from his heart pounding. Not even watching the Red Sox cheered him up.
He blew it.
He really blew it this time by hurting Lindsay. The moment when things were starting to work out, it was gone the moment he went to the Red Sox game. He and Lindsay already saw through it, but the guilt was too strong. He couldn't even get up.
"Ben…?" Her voice echoed as she opened the door. "Oh, my god, are you alright?"
He felt her lips against his skin.
What did he ever do to deserve someone like her? With what he put her through, she wouldn't even look twice at him. She was so patient, so understanding… and he loved her for it.
"Lindsay, I'm sorry…" More tears left down his face. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to push you way…"
Baseball covered the emptiness inside of him. It hid the shame and the pain. Without it, he was nothing. He could either have the Red Sox, or Lindsay.
He couldn't have both.
"Shh…" Her voice soothed him as she held him in his arms. "It's alright… It's alright."
With her, she made him a better man. To own up to his mistakes and be accountable. She was his strength.
With two powerful hands, he gently placed them on her face.
"I won't leave you, Lindsay… I promise you. I won't leave you all alone…!"
Tears were beginning to flow in her eyes too.
"I won't leave you like how my parents left each other."
"Oh, Ben, it's gonna be alright…!" The embrace was much tighter than the last time. "As long as I live… I'm never giving up on you."
Lindsay was the only one who saw the lonely, scared child that he was. And he loved her for it. Without this woman, he wouldn't be half the man he is.
Their lips met.
Time and time again, she saved him from himself.
