He found her there, afterwards, staring out at the water. "Cameron" he called, "you're getting wet". She ignored him, so he limped closer to lean over the back of the bench.
"What do you want, House?" she questioned dully, not bothering to look at him. Her hair was drenched. He sat down beside her on the bench.
"I saw you stalk out, and I thought…" Cameron cut him off angrily.
"You thought what, House? You thought 'Oh, Cameron is pissed, what a good time to go and irritate her'. Is that about right?" She glared at him, challenging him.
"Well, it was more along the lines of 'I wonder what the wombat did now', but I thought I'd come and ask" he didn't look her in the eye. He slid a Styrofoam cup across the bench. "I brought you coffee." She eyed him suspiciously, but picked it up.
"Why?"
"It's cold out here if you hadn't noticed."
Cameron sipped the coffee tentatively. "Why are you really here?" she questioned in a slightly calmer tone.
House scratched his chin, stalling. "Saw you storm off, figured I'd get in on the juicy gossip first before your little boyfriend tells everyone." Cameron laughed bitterly.
"I doubt he'll be telling anyone." House looked at her sideways. Her face was set, angry.
"What happened?" he asked more softly. Cameron turned to him, her eyes hard.
"I ended it." House looked at her carefully.
"He proposed" he stated matter-of-factly. Cameron's gaze shifted to the coffee cup in her hands.
"Yes."
"So you ended the relationship."
"Yes." Cameron toyed with the edge of the plastic lid. She looked up at him. "You aren't surprised." House shook his head, slowly.
"No. I'm not." She looked up at him, interested.
"Why not? We had the perfect relationship" she sneered "Or at least everyone seems to think so."
"Chase isn't complicated enough for you. It's too easy." House pointed out simply.
"Or too hard." She admitted, sighing. "It's not a role I'm made to play. I need someone who throws expectations, who doesn't simply do exactly what you expect them to because it's the next logical step."
"Or, simply put, Chase is an idiot." Cameron chuckled.
"Simply put, yes." Her eyes sparkled. "It was fun for a while, though." House rolled his eyes.
"Spare me the details."
"I wasn't planning on sharing them." Cameron retorted. She took another sip of her coffee. "You keep seeking me out." She commented.
"Do I?"
"For cases and things" she observed him over her coffee cup, awaiting an answer.
House sighed. "Thirteen is the only useful one" he admitted. "Well, and Foreman" he added grudgingly. "But the other two are useless."
She grinned. "So you miss me."
He eyed her in mock disgust. "Just your brain, Cameron. Don't go overboard!"
Cameron smiled. "Good enough for me" she stood up. "Well, I'm soaked, as are you. I'm heading home."
House raised an eyebrow. "You're keeping the apartment?"
Cameron looked down at him, hands on her hips. "What? You thought Chase wore the pants in the relationship? Besides, I found it." House stood too.
"Fair point" they walked slowly back towards the parking lot.
