The fire was crackling merrily, casting a soft glow on the couple. The wine had been adding to the warmth and rapidly disappearing all night long, and her man…

Was laughing at her.

Not just laughing, but laying on his back, clutching his sides with tears streaming down his cheeks laughing.

"It's not funny you know. How was I supposed to know what it meant? I was what, ten when the song came out?" Sara was full of indignation at being laughed at by Gil. She crossed her arms and gave him a sour look, which seemed to redouble his laughing.

They had been lounging by the fire at their new house. The dog was snoozing in his bed while they sat and drank wine and discussed music. Gil had a fine collection of vinyl albums and had put on a few of them to play. She had pointed out that some of them had been in her parents' collection as well. That was when she told him the subject of his mirth.

To her ten year old mind the singer's refusal to give his girl a "pearl necklace" had everything to jewelry.

It wasn't until she was in college that she got the real meaning behind the song.

Author's Note #2: It is in reference to ZZ Top's Pearl Necklace.
