John was half asleep on the couch, with Elly taking up her usual position on his chest, both of them covered by a blanket. Elly's gaze occasionally switched from the movie on the screen to the snow falling softly outside. "Grandpa," she called.

John struggled back to wakefulness. "Yes, sweetheart?"

"Does Christmas come with the snow?"

Two sentences into this conversation and John was already thoroughly confused. That didn't bode well. "What was that?"

"Does Christmas come with the snow?"

"Elly, I'm very sorry but I have no idea what you're talking about."

"Grandpa, don't you know what Christmas is?"

"Elly, I am well aware of what Christmas is. We celebrated it last year."

"Well I was watching a DVD about Christmas and there was always snow. Does that mean Christmas comes with the snow?"

"What exactly do you mean by 'I watched a DVD about Christmas'? We don't own any DVDs like that."

"I found it."

"Elly, I have told you about watching DVDs you just find," John sighed. "There could be anything on them."

"But this one was about Christmas."

"But what if it had been about something else?"

"You mean like those scary movies?"

"Among other things," John nodded.

Elly cocked her head in confusion. "What could be worse than the scary movies?"

"Just know they're out there," John said sternly. He absolutely refused to explain pornography to his young granddaughter. Not to mention the sex talk that was sure to follow such a discussion. No, Elly could wait to learn such things from him.

"I promise I won't watch any more DVDs that I find, grandpa. Not until you say so."

"Thank you sweetheart. Now what was your question again?"

"Does Christmas come with the snow?"

John paused as he thought about the many ways he could answer. He could tell Elly all about the traditions of Christmas, its history and its myths. Perhaps he could try to explain the religious significance it held before the world had come to this. Or he could even simply try to show her why it was pinned down to a single date rather than the wide expanse she was trying to give it. But really, that all sort of defeated the purpose of such a holiday. It was meant to be something bigger than all of those things.

"Yes, Elly, Christmas comes with the snow."
