Pi Day

by outlaw author

The first time Dean heard about it, Sammy had still been in elementary school and had come bounding out for breakfast one morning with a bright grin, proclaiming, "Happy Pi Day, Dean!" He'd had a moment of panic at first, thinking he'd missed some flyer or other, and was Sam supposed to bring a pie to class today?

Sam must've noticed his confusion because next he was saying, "March 14th? Get it, 3 – 14? Pi Day?" The "duh" was implied; Sammy may have been a smarty-pants, but he could also be a little shit with an attitude sometimes.

He made up for it that afternoon when Dean picked him up from their neighbors who occasionally watched Sam after school. Grey-haired Mrs. Woolsey answered the door and let Dean in with a small smile.

He was met once more by Sam's beaming grin and the words, "Happy Pi Day, Dean!"

Distracted as he was by the smudges of brown and white somethings on Sammy's dimpled cheeks, Dean didn't immediately notice that his little brother was holding something out, an offering for big brother's approval. There, in Sam's outstretched hands, was, to Dean's eyes, deliciousness in a dish. Thin, crumbly graham crust, creamy chocolate filling, and decorating the top – the pi symbol in whipped cream. A Pi Day pie.

"You made this, kiddo?" A raised eyebrow.

"Yep!" His gap-toothed smile was all pride. "Mrs. Woolsey helped."

"I bet she did," he chuckled shortly. "Now what do you say?"

"Thank you, Mrs. Woolsey!" Dean seconded the thanks with a nod of his own as they left.

"C'mon, Sammy, time to be goin'. I wanna eat some of that pie!"

"What about dinner?"

"Dinner! Haven't you heard it's a holiday, Sammy?"

"Deeaann!" Sam giggled.

Dean winked and ruffled his little brother's hair.

That night, chocolate cream pie was the centerpiece on the Winchester family dinner table.
