"Come on scaredy cat!"
Sauvigna yelled as her and her best friend Sapphire ran down Silverlane Road, something they have done countless times before. Sauvigna loved to see sapphire get her hands dirty. Sapphire being the granddaughter of one of the most richest Pressurizers in district 1. Sapphire never liked to get into trouble, but she loved to hang out with Sauvigna. sauvigna was the only person to ever treat her differently. The only one to treat her like everyone else, and sapphire loved the feeling. Everybody, from the sneeky reporters from the capitol, to the retired peacekeepers from district 2, wanted to get their hands on sapphires family diamonds. They wanted a discount of course. And everyone was more then happy to supply one of the few families with pressure-pushers with whatever they desired. The finest furs, the best wines, the most select cuts of meat... Anything for those diamonds, which had to go directly to the capitol untouched.
But not Sauvigna, who family made orange and strawberry flavored Ipecac for the capitol. She never liked making the syrup herself, and was always in constant training for the hunger games. That's why she always ran down Silverlane Road a little faster then Sapphire, a little harder, a littler further. Silverlane road itself was a main street which cut across district 1 splitting it in two, and ran south, deep into the mountains. There was a rumor that it ran far under the mountains right to the capitol, so that they could make sure no other routes could be taken captive by thieves, as district 2 was known for having a special peacekeepers training program that involved being a clever thief, but that was only a rumor, and both Sauvigna and sapphire had never run that far before.
"I dont wanna go any further Vinny! The lights getting dim."
Sapphire yelled as they ran deeper and deeper into the mountain. This was the furthest that they had ever ran before, Sapphire keeps turning back to look at the entrance of the tunnel, with every turn of the head the light got dimmer and dimmer. Suddenly sauvigna stops, gasping for air.
"This is the furthest you've ever run scardey cat!" she teased Sapphire as she shoved her shoulder and gave her an approving look. Sapphire enjoyed the looks Sauvigna gave her. Not like the long, disapproving looks from her mother, which she was used to.
"We gotta make you strong if your gonna run those graphite machines one day, my cousin Pino says that they are extremely heavy to hold in place."
As the two girls heave and huff, trying to catch their breath, Sapphire looks at Sauvignas rip in her shirt under her arm pit and tries to touch it, but Sauvigna quickly turns and tries to hide it.
"Let me stitch that, you know I love to sew"
She says, and reaches out to touch the hole, but Sauvigna quickly grabs her hand and says
"Nope, Im getting new cloths tomorrow, our escort for the hunger games is bringing us all new cloths so that we'll be ready for the volunteers competition next week. Every year you made an outfit for me at the reaping festival and every year I have lost. This year is gonna be different. But dot be mad, your still my number one buddy...You gonna root for me right, scardey cat?"
"Yea, I guess so..." Sapphire says in a dim voice. sapphire never enjoyed the games one bit, and had no need to, with all the trainees stacked up she never had the slightest worry of being reaped into the games. Sauvigna is 18, one year older then Sapphire, and this was her last year to win the volunteers token. No matter who was reaped from district 1, the person with the volunteers token had the right and respect to take tesserae and the loudspeaker to yell the words "volunteer" at the reaping festival. Sapphire on the other hand, always enjoyed making the clothes, watching the tribute interviews and creating the latest fashions for many of the capitols young girls. She was well on her way to becoming a great designer, to the dismay of her mother, who ran the pressure-pushers and wanted Sapphire to continue in the family business.
" You guess so?" Sauvigna said in a weird voice, still catching her breath.
" You sound like you wanna try for the competition... You will have to be ME, thats for sure!"
"Hay you two, get off the road, Silverlane is closing and you two need to get back home before dark, I know you dont live around here!" A strong male voice called out from a transport car. He started honking his horn for the two to get off the road, which had turned from the usual shiny grey concrete of district 1, to a dark brown dirt.
"Vinny, lets go to the victors village, my cousin is having a dinner in Glimmer's name before the quarter quell... Maximus, that guy from the capitol that you like is gonna be there..." She says, trying to entice Sauvigna to come over. Sauvigna hated to hang out with Sapphire at her cousins house in the victors village, she always wanted to earn the right to be there. But she had a secret crush on Maximus, a former tribute escort turned writer for the capitol. He always brought cisserettes with him, which Sauvigna likes to smoke and try to look cool smoking, even though they hurt her chest.
"Well"... Sauvigna said,
"If Maximus is gonna be there i'll have to wash my hair, before he gets there. Lets run back."
"Run?"
Sapphire said, to her dismay, but as she turned to let out her tired grown, Sauvigna was already a few paces ahead of her. They both ran back out the tunnel, and began to head northeast, towards the victors village in district 1's Redwyne borough.
