The Only Place: Rough Draft

I do not own Kyo Kara Maoh or any of its characters!

This is my first Kyo Kara Maoh fanfic, helpful criticism is welcome :3

Conrad and Yuuri were in one of the rooms aboard a ship heading back to Shin Makoku, getting ready to turn in for the night. It was quiet on the ship, aside from the sound of the waves crashing against the side of the ship. They were both returning from an unplanned camping trip to a nearby island. Conrad had suggested it, noticing Yuuri's agitation with the amount of paperwork and studying being shoved upon him. Of course they left without letting anyone know, otherwise Günter would never have let Yuuri go.

Yuuri was currently telling Conrad about his school troubles back on earth. He talked about his mom and her crazy attempts to follow Yuuri when he transported himself back to shin Makoku. How him and Murata went all the way across town to go to the arcade, only to find it was closed. How the cherry blossoms would be blooming in a few weeks. Conrad listened as Yuuri talked, commenting every now and again. Yuuri figured Conrad was just humoring him by listening to all his silly rambles about his earth world, but in truth Conrad was listening to Yuuri's stories intensely, interested about Yuuri's life in the other world.

After a while Yuuri got quiet, even though he was in the middle of telling a story about one of his brothers "must protect Yuu-chan" moments. Conrad stopped what he was doing and turned back to the suddenly quiet teen. Yuuri sat with a troubled look on his face.

"Is everything alright, Hekia?" Conrad asked, concerned. Yuuri looked up at Conrad, uncertainty swimming in his eyes.

"Its Yuuri" He answered back out of habit. "Conrad…" he hesitated, looking down again before continuing quickly. "You've promised to protect me, even if it costs you your life. You've dedicated your entire life to me, and I've been so... I've been so selfish! And stupid... I mean… I cause you so much trouble... Why do you stay?" Yuuri paused, taking in a shaky breath before continuing again. "I don't want you to feel like you're forced to be here because it is your duty. If you want to do something else with your life, if you want to leave… I-I won't hold it against you." Yuuri finished, his shoulders sagged in relief, finally having said what's been bothering him for a while. He wanted Conrad to stay, obviously, but he didn't want to force him to stay. Maybe Conrad wants to be somewhere else? What if Yuuri was holding Conrad back?

"Oh, Yuuri" Suddenly Yuuri was wrapped in Conrad's arm, his face pressed up against the soldiers chest. "By your side is the only place I want to be. I am not here just because it is my duty; I am here because I want to be here. And I will always be close by, protecting you until the end." Conrad pulled back, his brown eyes meeting with Yuuri's black ones, and gave one of his soft smiles.

Yuuri smiled back, relieved, and touched by what Conrad said.

"Conrad… Thank you."
