A Bump in the Road

"Paris, I need your article by Monday. Jason, make these edits on your article and get it to me by Tuesday." Rory finished barking orders and grabbed her papers. "I am leaving town for the weekend, so try not to destroy the paper while I'm gone." With that, Rory left the room and headed to her car. A few minutes later, she arrived at her apartment. Her empty apartment.

She was still getting used to the idea of Logan being in London. She hated living in that big apartment all alone, but she had no where else to go. All the good housing was already taken. She didn't want to spend another minute in that empty space. Rory grabbed her bag and packed some things and walked out the door, locking it behind her. A few hours later, she was back in Stars Hallow and pulling into her mother's driveway. It was good to be home.

"Mom, are you here?" Rory called as she walked up to the house. "Mom?" There was no answer. Rory walked around the house, but there were no lights on. She must be at Luke's. Rory hopped back in her car and immediately headed for Luke's diner. It took her just a few minutes to drive to the diner and park. As she opened the door she looked around for her mom.

"Luke, have you seen my mom?" she asked as she sat down at the counter.

"Why would I?" he asked cynically.

"You are her fiancé," Rory replied.

"Not since last night," Luke said. "I guess you haven't heard – the wedding's off."

"WHAT?" gasped Rory. "Excuse me, I have to go." Rory ran out of the diner and quickly go into her call and pulled out her cell phone. Six Rings. No answer.

This is Lorelei Gilmore. Obviously I'm not available since you are not talking to me. Anyway, you know what to do after the beep. Well, you should. If you don – beep.

"Hi mom, this is Rory. WHERE ARE YOU???? Luke just told me the wedding is off. What is going on? Call me as soon as you get this." Rory drove back to her mom's house and let herself in. She sat her stuff down and sat on the couch and waited. And she waited. "Mom, Where are you???" she thought out loud. A few hours later she heard the door open and shut.

Rory got up and ran to the kitchen. "Mom, where have you be—" Rory made it to the kitchen and finally got a good look at her mom. Lorelei looked as if she was wearing her clothes from the day before. Her hair was messy and she looked as if she had been crying. "Oh Mom," Rory said as she hurried over and hugged her. Her mom began to cry.

"Everything is going to be okay, mom, you and Luke will work things out." Rory held her mom tight. "You and Luke belong together. The whole town knows that. It will be alright."

Rory knew that her mother still had doubts, but as her daughter, It was Rory's job to try and comfort her mother. "Why don't you go lay down on the couch and I will be right back." Rory helped her mother to the couch and then grabbed her purse. "I am going to the store. Let's see we need ….. icecream, pickles, French fries ….. oh, and a new movie." Rory mentally crossed items off of their list of comfort foods. Her mom was still sitting there, on the couch, frozen.

Ten minutes later, Rory had all the items in a basket and proceeded to check out. She groaned when she saw who was at the counter. "Kirk!" she said. "What are you doing here?"

"I thought I might want a career in food sales one day, and I thought this might be a good place to learn."

"Fine. Just check me out." It took Kirk ten minutes to figure out the register. Finally, he handed Rory her change.

""Have a nice day, Miss Gilmore"

"Bye, Kirk."
