For weeks Lily and James had watched the tension between Sirius and Remus growing. They knew something had changed, knew that they'd both been acting weirdly since Sirius had conftonted Remus, but instead of the domestic bliss they had both hoped for, things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. Finally, after almost a week of Sirius storming around moodily and Remus hiding away in the library Lily convinced James to do something.

"Come on James! I know you think we should just leave them to sort it out but can't you see how miserable they're making each other?"

"Fine. Do you even have a bloody plan?"

Lily squealed with excitement and dragged him over to a sofa in a corner of the common room where people were less likely to eavesdrop. "I knew you'd agree with me eventually!" (Actually she was sure that if Sirius' most recent bout of frustrated anger hadn't resulted in James' chocolates being stomped on James would never have taken action.)

"Fine then. We're going to divide and conquer, and then we will make sure that those two idiots realise just how in love with each other they are."

"Oh and then what? I suppose we'll all ride off into the sunset and braid each others hair?"

"Shut up James!"

She squirmed away as he tickled her and she tried to maintain the frown on her face. "This is serious James"

"Fine." He sighed and summoned the Marauders Map from the dormitory. "I guess we might as well get this over with as quickly as possible."

"Remus?"

Lily stepped nervously into the library, looking for her friend's familiar head of almost tidy hair.

"Hi Lily" He looked up from the heavy book resting in his lap. Immediately Lily noticed he looked unbearably tired and tried to figure out if it was full moon time. He saw her concentration and knew immediately what she was thinking about.

"I'm fine Lily. I'm just tired."

She sat down, deciding to come straight to the point.

"How come you've been avoiding James and Sirius? Pretty much the only time I see you is when we do patrols, and even then you seem distant."

"I'm sorry Lily. I didn't mean to make you feel like I was slacking off I-"

She cut him off abruptly.

"Don't be ridiculous. I'm just concerned for you. How about we go for a drink? See you at the Three Broomsticks on Friday?"

Remus looked eager but conflicted. "Just you and me?"

She might have hesitated just a little longer than she should have but he didn't notice. "Just the two of us."

He smiled at her gratefully and she stood up.

"Sorry to rush off but I promised Alice I'd help her with the Charms essay."

"No problem. Bye Lily."

He never noticed that anything was amiss.

Sirius proved harder to convince.

"Sure I'd love a drink. We could smuggle some of that firewhiskey in again." He had a dangerous glint in his eye and for the first time James understood Lily's concern.

"No I uh- I thought it would be nice to go to the Three Broomsticks."

"I'd rather just drown my sorrows somewhere I can fall back into bed without much effort mate."

"Yeah but you know how Lily gets when I drink here at school. Remember how mad she was last time?"

"Your girlfriend doesn't have to know every bloody thing you do! Don't you ever feel restricted by being pinned down?"

James had never seen Sirius like this. He seemed vulnerable and almost like he was looking for something from James, acceptance or reassurance perhaps. James didn't know what to do so he just shook his head ruefully.

"You know Lily. She finds out everything. So what do you say? Hogsmeade on Friday?"

"Whatever."

Lily got there first, Remus in tow and made sure he was settled at the table before excusing herself to the bathroom. Remus was a little alarmed to notice that the pub seemed to be having a dinner evening, with tables setup instead of the ordinary drinks at the counter. Clearly Lily wanted more than just a drink.

James abandoned Sirius on the doorstep, claiming to have forgotten something vital and told Sirius to go in and get their table. Before Sirius could argue he apparated away. Bewildered, Sirius entered the pub and was taken abackby it's unusual formalness. He asked for the Potter table and the waiter smiled and led the way.

"Remus!"

"Sirius?"

They stared at each other in shocked horror. The waiter grinned and almost pushed Sirius into the seat. He lit the candle with a quick non-verbal spell and walked off, leaving the boys speechless.

"Uh- hi" Remus was the first to speak. "I guess Lily and James were serious when they threatened an intervention."

Sirius stared at him coldly. He was a Black of course, and had perfected his sullen glare from a young age. "Why did you do it Moony?"

"What?! You're blaming me?"

"You ran away from me!"

"After you told me you couldn't commit to anything and you weren't gay!"

Their voices had become raised and the peole around them made disapproving hush noises.

"I lied okay. I-I care so much and I don't know! I don't know okay? I'm freaking terrified Moony. This thing- I've never felt like this and I just-" His voice caught. He looked completely embarassed and Remus grabbed his hand.

"Look- Sirius maybe we could just give this a shot. Let's just have dinner and see what happens. No pressure, no consequences. Just dinner."

Sirius brightened quickly. "Why Moony, did you just suggest a date?"

"Why yes Padfoot, I think I did."

Surprisingly, they both enjoyed their 'date'. At first it seemed awkward and neither could quite meet the other's eyes but eventually they settled into their old but comfortable ways. About halfway through dinner Remus found his eyes drawn to Sirius' lips, wanting desperately to feel them against his again, and when Sirius raised his eyebrows he winked back boldly.

Afterwards, Remus couldn't quite tell Lily what they had talked about, and she wasn't sure whether he had been in such a daze that he had hardly noticed or whether he was keeping that conversation close to his heart.

Dinner flowed into an evening stroll which somehow ended up with Sirius and Remus lying on their backs staring up at the sky. Sirius pointed out all of the most interesting constellations but Remus was too aware of the close proximity of Sirius to him to pay attention. Under the pretext of showing Remus his name star Sirius clasped his hand, pointing up at the star which shone brightest. Instead of letting go though, he held on, their hands tightly grasped as they lay together, each considering that he would give anything to freeze this moment forever in their hearts.

"Remus"

"Yes Sirius?"

"I think this deserves a chance, don't you?"

Remus squeezed his hand in reply and rolled closer to Sirius, snuggling up to his warmth and drowsily drifting asleep.
