Monty was a very intelligent man, smart enough to know over a hundred species of snakes.

Monty knew who this "Stephano" was, without the Baudelaire children having to warn him of their own suspicions. He didn't want to worry them, a stupid mistake he should've never made, so he didn't let the Baudelaires see how worried he was, didn't let them know how scared he was.

If he could've gone back, he would've thrown that man out of his home the second he heard his story. He knew that it was Count Olaf in disguise. He wasn't stupid.

But, as he put the bambini to bed that night, assuring them they'd be in the plane to Peru by the next morning and that Stephano was long gone, he truly believed that the danger had passed.

"Good night, bambini." He said to them, patting the children's sheets and standing to go to bed himself.

"Good night, Uncle Monty." replied Klaus.

Monty paused briefly, having the sudden realization that he'd finally received their trust. He smiled and nodded to Klaus, happy to have it and even happier to be leaving this wretched, criminal state.

He padded down the stairs to check the doors and make sure they were locked. A tedious task, but there were three children sharing his home now and he didn't want them in any danger at all.

As the locks turned, Monty noticed that the door to the Reptile Room was open and he swore he'd closed it before they left for the movies.

So, praying that whatever happened next didn't wake the sleeping children in the room above (especially Klaus, he most certainly needed the sleep he hadn't been getting for a few months), Monty slowly crept over to the door and walked into his Reptile Room.

He looked around, then something caught his attention and he jumped back from a syringe coming at him from the right.

There was Stephano and another man with hooks for hands that Monty didn't recognize.

"Did you really think it would be that easy?" asked Stephano.

"Drop the act, Olaf, I'm not an imbecile." Monty snapped, holding up his balled fists and hoping the bambini didn't wake up.

"Oh, you know who I am." Olaf huffed. "Disappointing." Then he lunged at Monty again.

Monty jumped back, easily escaping the syringe once more.

"I knew who you where the second I saw you, I should've thrown your culo magro* out the door the second you tried to come in." Monty snarled.

Another lunge, another miss, and Olaf growled. "Stop moving, there's no need to swear."

"Vai all'inferno, figlio del diavolo (1)." Monty cut off the man with the hook hands and kicked Olaf's feet out from under him.

Spitting blood from his mouth, Olaf stood and nodded to something in the shadows.

Monty had turned, looking for paper and a pencil, and was spitting words Olaf could just barely understand. "Vile, miserabile, spregevole, uomo orribile, abusivo, orribile (2)!" Monty turned back, but was caught by a stronger person.

He writhed, desperately trying to get free, he called out. "Bambini! Bambini, corri e salva te stesso! (3)"

Olaf cut him off. "Now, now, none of that. They can't hear you anyways."

"You where the pride of the organization! How could you do this to the Baudelaires! They were your friends!" Monty shouted, struggling harder as the syringe was brought nearer.

"Friends?" Olaf laughed. "I don't have friends. I'm doing this because I want to, Montgomery Montgomery. Now hold still. This will only hurt worse if you struggle."

Monty did the exact opposite, struggling for all he was worth.

He wished he'd gotten more time with the children to answer the questions.

He wished he'd gotten to call them bambini one more time, wished he could call Klaus topo libro once more, wished he could call Violet fiore figlio.

He wished he'd not been so careless.

Maybe then the children would be safe, away from Olaf and away from danger.

The venom went coursing through his veins and he groaned. "Bambini, mi dispiace." He murmured, just as the poison took him and the villain laughed as Monty dropped dead to the floor.

ASOUE~ASOUE~ASOUE

Josephine wished she where braver.

She wished she was a fierce and formidable as she'd once been.

The children had been counting on her and she let them down.

"Where's the fierce and formidable Josephine you once were?" Klaus had shouted at her on the boat.

"She's been away from a long time." Josephine replied sadly.

Now, as her body was devoured by the leeches she despised so much, she couldn't help but wish she'd been smarter.

She looked up and prayed that the children got away from Count Olaf and prayed that they'd somehow get to safety.

She closed her eyes and let Death take her. Perhaps she'd find peace in the afterlife with her lovely husband Ike.

When she opened them again, she was sitting next to a pool. "Josephine!" cried a new voice and Josephine was engulfed in a massive hug.

"Monty!" she laughed, hugging him back.

"Josephine it's so good to see you again!" called Monty's assistant, Gustav.

"Oh, Gustav, lovely to see you too."

"Josephine, I know you were taking care of the bambini. Are they alright?" Monty asked, pulling back.

Josephine sighed, placing her hand on Monty's cheek. "They miss you, Monty. They miss you and their parents very much."

"Oh, I wish I'd gotten more time with them. The six months I had where a blessing, but so short of a time." Monty sighed.

Gustav gently wrapped an arm around Monty's shoulders.

Monty sniffed and wiped his tears. "Well, enough of that. There's someone here who'd like to see you, Josephine. Come, I'll take you too him."

Ike. Josephine followed Monty and Gustav as they led her to the other side of the pool.

Ike turned and smiled. "My dear Josephine." he held out his hand and she took it. "I've found you once more."

Josephine smiled. "It's good to see you again, Ike." she murmured.

Monty turned to Gustav and nodded. "Alright, what's going on with the bambini?"

"The Pool of the Living will show us." Gustav replied. "They're lost to us now, but we'll help them as we can until they find us again."

Monty nodded. "Let's get started."
