His blood was covering her hands, her lap, her everything. But she didn't care. She hugged him as close as she could, knowing that this might be the last time she would ever see him alive. He made a small choked sound, causeing her to place his head gently on her lap. He stared up at her with those dark eyes, a mixture of warmth and sadness. Tears were pooling in her eyes, staring at the man before her.
"Tell me a story," he suddenly said, a small smile finding it's way on his face. He reached up a hand to brush against her cheek, even though the movement just pained him more.
"A s-story?" she whimpered, gently stroking his dark hair.
"Yeah. A fairy tale. I've never heard one before," he said softly, noting how the tears were starting to fall. He knew that he could very well die, which was why he wanted to spend his last moments with her.
"O-okay," she agreed quietly, not wanting to disappoint him. She took a shaky breath, struggling to keep her voice steady. "Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess. She lived in a tall tower in the woods, forever destined to never leave her tower. She sang with the birds in hope that one day she would be saved. But one day, a prince came riding by her tower by chance, exploring the woods."
She ignored the way his breathing was growing shallower and quicker.
"He heard the princess singing, and he was entranced by her voice. The princess was leaning out the window, letting her hair fly with the wind. The prince was captivated by her voice, so he found her tall tower by following her singing."
His breathing had almost stopped completely, but still she continued.
"She was so beautiful to him, he decided that he had to have her as his wife. So he climbed up the tower with his bare hands and stole away the princess. She was happy that he had saved her from the tower, and they fell in love."
His breath hitched once, then his chest failed to rise again. The tears came faster than before, but she had to finish. For him.
"They both got married, and they had a beautiful daughter. They lived together for eternity, and had a happily ever after."
Nami buried her face in his hair, not caring about the blood that streaked her arms, face, and legs. She couldn't let her captain go.
"The end."
