Severus stalked down the deserted corriders, taking ponts left and right from students out after curfew in late night rendevous. He was finishing so he could finally go to sleep, after all, a day having Neville Longbottom constantly melting cauldrens can take it's toll.
He neared his last stop, the Astronomy Tower when he heard something. Readying himself in the shadows to take points and scare the unaware student, when he finally heard what the person was saying clearly. Or rather, singing.
"You don't know my name.
You don't know, anything about me."
He paused. The child, girl if he was not mistaken, was not a bad singer. Not by a longshot.
"I try to play nice
I wanna be in your game.
The things that you say
You may think I never hear about them.
But word travels fast
I'm telling you to your face
I'm standing here behind your back.
You don't know it feels, to be outside the crowd
You don't know how it feels to be left out
And you don't know feels, to be your own best friend."
Severus was shocked at such longing and sadness in the child's voice. The song itself made unpleasant memories of his own childhood long suppressed show up with vengeance.
"On the outside looking in.
If you could read my mind
You might see more of me than meets the eye
And you've been all wrong
Not who you think I am
Cause you've never given me a chance."
Severus inched his way around the wall blocking his view of the girl, determined to see who she was.
"You don't know how it feels to be outside the crowd
You don't know what it's like
To be left out
And you don't know how it feels to be your own best friend
On the outside looking in
Oh I'm tired of staying at home
I'm bored and all alone
I'm sick of wasting my time."
Severus peeked over the last inch seperating him and the girl and was shocked at what he saw.
Well, honestly, he shouldn't be. He'd heard the other Slytherins teasing their dorm mate, but honestly, he didn't know it was that bad. Though, he admitted to himself, he never really noticed till now how the third year never had any friends. She never hung out with anyone, never gave trouble, never raised her hand in any class he knew of, though with as smart as she was she should have been a Ravenclaw.
"You don't know how it feels
To be outside the crowd
You don't know what it's like.
To be left out
You don't know how it feels
To be your own best friend
On the outside, looking in."
"Hello Professor Snape. I will be heading back to the dorm now."
He shouldn't be surprised she knew he was there. "Yes, you will be, Miss Snape."
"Night Dad."
"Night baby, love you."
"Love you too."
