Something Inborn [261 words; Veser Amaker Hatch]
Got into this a webcomic in the past week or so and it is totally awesome. I love Veser so much. I wish I could have made this longer, though. :(

His mother was always singing. He could hear it from the living room, his bedroom and from the backyard. Veser could even hear her mythical voice over the beatings his father gave him. If he allowed himself, he'd be sent into this half trance-like state where his eyes [genetically a gift from his un-human mother] get glassy as if high on weed. It made him weaker and once he'd listened to her songs as he took a bath as a child- and almost drowned- and made sure to tune out her song.
At times, Veser had no choice but to listen to her voice that carried throughout the house. When he laid in bed, too sore from a recent beating from his bastard of a father and too tired to care, her voice would infiltrate his head. His eyes once again became glassy and his eye-lids drooped. Vaguely he could see images behind his eyes, even though his eyes were open; were these visions? Underwater images, rocky seasides and the smell- where was it coming from - of sea salt.
If he listened carefully her words, so foreign to his father, would distort in his head and Vesser swears they twist into English, or not, because it could just him translating from inborn. This Selkie language, his brow would scrunch up, listening and almost feels like he understands her songs.
That is, until his father smacked him across the face, breaking his concentration. And Veser swore later to Lee that he'd just gotten into another fight with some kid at school.
