D/C: I do not own Kannazuki no Miko. I do own this story idea.

Note: Edited after someone pointed out I spelled 'Himeko' as 'Himiko'. I hadn't seen the series in a while, so I expected to spell one of the names wrong, I apologize.

Ice Cream. The treat often associated with the term 'comfort-food', food eaten whenever a person is depressed. Nobody can prove that point better than these three teenagers enveloped in their melancholy life drama.

Chikane stepped into the large kitchen, her long blue hair flowing behind her. The closer she got to the refrigerator, the more the tears in her eyes escaped her eyes and cascaded down her face. It was not her day today, and she needed comfort food. She opened the top half of the fridge, the freezer, and removed a jar labeled 'Häagen-Dazs Mint Chip' and a spoon from a nearby dish rack. She slowly walked to a corner, sat down with the ice cream in her lap, and started eating straight from the jar, ignoring the salty taste added to the sugary treat by her tears.

"Why did seeing her kiss him hurt so much...Why?" She took another tear-stained spoonful of mint chip into her mouth. "Himeko…I shouldn't have helped you for that date, I shouldn't have pushed you two closer…But, I want to see you happy, and I have a feeling that will work out better with Souma Ogami than it will with me…" She licked the spoon as she put the lid on the jar. "You will never see me as more than a friend, and that truth kills me inside…"

Himeko walked into the kitchen, her hair and clothes slightly disheveled from what had happened minutes ago. She needed something to drown her sorrow in. That something happened to be a jar of vanilla ice cream. She sat down near the fridge, her frame sliding down the wall and soon resting on the floor, tears welling up in her purple eyes.

"Chikane-chan…why? We were such good friends…and this priestess bond brought us closer…you even helped me get ready for those dates with Ogami…but now you're with the Orochi…and you…you…" She burst into a fit of tears, the scarring memories of molestation still fresh in her mind. She ate a scoop of vanilla in a feeble attempt to calm the haunting thoughts, but she knew they would never go away. "Chikane-chan…where did it all go wrong…what do I do now…where do I go from here…" She placed the ice cream next to her, the tears now streaming out of her eyes. "I have to save you from the Orochi, but I don't think I have the strength…"

Souma opened the creaky door of a mansion abandoned since his high school days. It wouldn't be abandoned for long, Himeko had met this one girl who turned out to be Chikane, and the memories from that parallel universe flooded back to them. The lovers would soon be living in this place, so they asked Souma to help them clean it out and check on its living condition. He remembered it all: him being part of the Orochi, him helping Himeko on so many levels with protection and support, him being rejected in both realities. All these uncovered memories fresh in his mind were too much to bear. He opened the fridge and found a jar of rocky road ice cream, still edible from all the preservatives and the cold air of the freezer. He scooped out a bit with his fingers and ate it. "Himeko is happy now, that's all that counts…" He threw the jar of ice cream across the room, the contents spattering on the wall. He sunk to his knees and buried his face in his hands. "I only wish for what makes her happy, but why can't it be with me…"

Ice cream is always associated with comfort-food, but in the end, the sugary substance does nothing for one's inner pain and misery.
