Aching Hearts at Midnight
"Look it's the Smurf's Houses floating around the sky" She called to the approaching footsteps.
She'd been watching the sky for around half an hour and was fascinated that the clouds had formed into the mushroom houses of the Smurf's. Of course the drink had helped with this. And now someone was joining her outside she had to tell him or her of her amazing discovery.
A familiar figure sat next to her outstretched body on the damp grass by the creek; "They're clouds Jen." Pacey stared up at the sky.
Feeling rather annoyed she sat up, "They might be clouds," She put on her best 'I'm drunk but trying to sound sober' voice, "but they are shaped like mushrooms and are therefore like the Smurf's homes."
Her friend laughed, "What you doing out here all alone anyway?"
"Same thing you are I guess," Her words were slurred, "avoiding the family- ness that is indoors."
It was true. Her neighbor's house was full of families, the Potters, Leerys, McPhees and a couple of Lindley/Ryan members and Witters.
"Partly..." the word trailed off as if something else was meant to be said afterwards.
She looked at him sympathetically, or the best she could in her drunken state, "Still not said anything thing then?"
"If you are referring to my very much unrequited feelings for our dear friend, Miss Josephine Potter, then you are indeed correct." A sigh escaped his lips.
The look on his face told her not to push the subject and with being as drunk as she was she wouldn't have kept it serious for long. "What time is it then? Surely near midnight."
He glanced at is watch, aiming it towards the light of the house, "It would be a minute to midnight."
No sooner had he said it but in the distance faint church bells could be heard welcoming in the New Year.
"Well since it's midnight..."Jen leaned towards him.
But he hardly heard her words. As he had glanced around the midnight sky his eyes had landed on the lights of his best friend's bedroom. There in the window stood two figures, quite obviously doing what everyone did at midnight on this night. He felt an ache in his heart. His attention came back a second later to his blonde friend, who had just finished her sentence and was leaning towards him. Would he regret it in the morning? Would it change things between them? He didn't know, he didn't care. He lent in; their lips brushed each other's before parting into a gentle kiss. Both could taste drink on each other and mint from breath fresheners but neither cared, it was their moment at midnight. They pulled apart, waiting a second for what they had done to sink in.
"Meant nothing Pace. It's midnight" She broke the silence first, lifting a wait off his shoulders.
He smiled at her, her small grin telling him it was nothing that they hadn't done before and meant as much now as it did before. "So Miss Lindley, shall we rejoin the party?" He stood and held out his hand.
Taking is hand she stood, "I think we should Mr. Witter."
