Kris had met Carmella by complete chance; there were so many things that could have been changed the day that they had met, and then Kris would never have found his best friend. They met on bittersweet terms, just two days after the Pittsburgh Penguins had won the Stanley Cup for the 2008-2009 season, and only a few days after the death of Kristopher's best friend Luc Bourdon.

Carmella was only eighteen, working as a waitress in a diner to help pay for the excess expenses of college that her parents couldn't help with. She had been working the afternoon shift at the diner that day when Kris had walked in, hair a mess under a Pittsburgh Pirates cap, sunglasses, clad in last nights rumpled jeans and T-shirt. He had walked straight to the back of the diner, trying to find a more private area so no one would be able to see him. He had been suffering from a hangover and was not in the mood to deal with people.

Carmella had spotted him right away. It was hard to not know a member of the Penguins hockey team in a city that was so dedicated to the sport. Even though she wasn't a local, Carmella had been roped into the wonderful sport of hockey by her boyfriend at the time, Peter. Having known that Kristopher was more than likely suffering from a hangover, she brought him over a large cup of black coffee and some toast. To this day Carmella swears she could never forget the complete look of astonishment and confusion that graced his face when she simply put down the items and walked away from his table.

She had come back to him about twenty minutes later to see that he had finished his toast and coffee and was texting someone on his cell phone. She simply smiled at him and took the dishes away, knowing that nobody wanted to speak when they were suffering from a hangover.

When Kris had asked for a check she had told him it was on the house, giving him special treatment that he was use to in this city, especially over the past couple of days after winning the Cup, but he couldn't help but feel that this time there was a different reason for him not having to pay. This girl gave off a motherly vibe, knowing exactly what he needed before he did and then just letting him go without paying, granted the bill couldn't be more than two or three dollars, he still decided to leave her a tip. So as he walked out of the diner he dropped a twenty on the table Carmella was seated at, speaking to some of the fellow waitresses as they waited for the lunch time rush to come in, and smiled at her shocked expression as she picked up the bill.

It was an insignificant meeting that didn't really mean anything to either person. They were both in happy relationships and good places in their lives, but the next season Kris would start showing up at the diner more regularly while Carmella and Peter would fight on a day to day basis. They had both just found one of the most important people in their lives and had no idea about it yet.

A/N: This is only the Prologue, so no, it is not meant to be very long and there will be more to come. (:
