A/N: I do not own "Tell My Father" from the musical Civil War. All lyrics are by Elton John. I just had the idea to use them.
Tell my father that his son
Didn't run, or surrender
That I bore his name with pride
As I tried to remember
You are judged by what you do
While passing through
The ocean was coming up on him fast as the plane whizzed through the air. The end was coming, and he knew it. As he was hurled toward the endless and vast blue below him, his life flashed before his eyes- of his family, his friends, and the words of a man who, although dead for years now, was still one of the most pivotal figures in his life. He recalled seeing his father in uniform as a child, and his father taking a knee and telling him that wearing this uniform was the biggest honor and blessing he ever received. It was in that moment that Steve Rogers had wanted to become a soldier.
As I rest 'neath fields of green
Let him lean on your shoulder
Tell him how I spent my youth
So the truth could grow older
Tell my father when you can
I was a man
Steve had taken to his father's example as best he could. He tried to live a good life, always honest and respectful of others. The virtues his parents had instilled as a young boy had not gone untapped. He was a true gentleman, even to those who picked on him. When he was injected with the Super Soldier Serum, he could have easily sought vengeance on those who hurt him in the past, but he did no such thing. He kept his moral compass pointing north, and did not sway from the kindness that had become his nature.
Tell him we will meet again
Where the angels learn to fly
Tell him we will meet as men
For with honor did I die
Now, as death greeted him in the form of the freezing ocean, he reflected on his life, and what he'd done throughout it. He realized that he had indeed lived up to his father's name, and hoped that he had made him proud. As his last moments came before him, he took a second to thank God for the life he'd been given. He'd been given the chance to live his boyhood dream, and that was more than most got to say. He was grateful for the family and friends he'd been gifted with, and that he left no chance untaken. He had so many things to be thankful for, and only now, on the verge of death, did he truly appreciate it.
Tell him how I wore the Blue
Proud and true through the fire
Tell my father so he'll know
I love him so
He was grateful for the chance to be Captain America. He got to serve his country in the battlefield, and was lucky enough to be dubbed a hero. Granted, at the time he hadn't seen it that way, but everyone had called him that. Now, he still didn't quite see it, but he understood the definition much better. His father was a hero, and he had the privilege of dying a heroes death- one he felt he didn't deserve. But now, the image of his family and friends were set firmly in his mind. The image of his Father was at the forefront and his thought was colored with the most pure admiration and love he thought he'd ever get the chance to feel.
Tell him how we wore the blue
Proud and true like he taught us
Tell my father not to cry
Then say goodbye...
The water was encroaching fast now. He sucked in what he thought would be his last breath as he said his last thanksgiving to God, thanking him for the experiences he'd had, and asking for protection and blessings for the people he'd been blessed to know. With an image of all of his family and friends swimming in his vision, he broke the surface of the water and was thrown backward, knocked unconscious as he was sent spinning into the plane, landing near the bottom steps, where he would remain for another seventy years before being found again.
