Wishing Upon a Star
It was the night of the day after the long battle at Hogwarts and many people, including Angelina Johnson, were still at Hogwarts.
She didn't know what to do anymore- Fred was dead, Remus was dead, Tonks was dead, and so many more. She still felt like crying, but she had cried so much it was hard to find the tears. She slowly wandered through the halls of Hogwarts until she found herself out on the grounds in front of Hagrid's hut.
Angelina looked at the house briefly, then sat down in the grass in front of it and stared at the sky. The stars shone brightly, twinkling in their place in the sky. The moon was an illuminated half moon high in the air.
As Angelina watched the sky, she pointed out constellations to herself that she had learned from her brief time in Astronomy. She was easily able to recognize them, but she did not remember what each star and constellation meant.
As she tried to recall the names and meanings of the stars in Orion's belt, she suddenly heard a thump as Hagrid plopped himself down next to her.
"'Ello, Angelina. What're ye doing here a' this time o' night?"
"Just thinking, Hagrid. So many people are dead. Fred..." Her voice trailed off as she once again thought about how her boyfriend was gone.
Hagrid awkwardly nodded once. "I'm sorry. I los' people too."
They resumed staring at the sky, watching the stars shine and twinkle in the night.
After some time, Angelina broke the silence. "I'm worried Hagrid. I don't know what's going to happen next. I always thought Fred and I would get married, but now that clearly can't happen..." She could feel tiny tears welling up in her eyes again and she started to shake.
"I know. I don' know wha' to do either."
"I just miss him so much, and I know George has it much worse than me, but it just hurts so much...and poor Teddy lost his parents, and Snape was actually good and he died...I'm so sorry that you have to listen to all of this. I'm rambling."
"No worries, we all have ta vent to someone a' some point."
A tear rolled down Angelina's face as she nodded and she wiped it away silently.
There was another moment of awkward silence.
"Ye want some rock cakes? Made 'em myself today," Hagrid offered.
She shook her head. "No thanks, I'm not hungry."
Hagrid persisted, "You shoul' eat somethin', it wouldn' do any good for ye to starve."
"I'll go to the kitchens when I go back in. I ate a little bit earlier."
"Ye promise?"
A small corner of her mouth quirked upwards, then back down again. "I promise."
"Good."
They resumed a comfortable silence as they again watched the stars, lying down after a few minutes.
"Look, a shootin' star," Hagrid pointed.
Angelina smiled a tiny bit as she recalled her childhood memories of falling stars. "Make a wish."
I wish that we can all recover from this tragedy. But I wish Fred wasn't dead.
Although they didn't say anything, both knew they had wished for the same thing. And as they sat together in peace, away from the fighting, chaos and crying, they realized that perhaps in time it was possible.
