Never Alone
"I won't let you fall, Mudblood."
Those words haunted her as she lingered in a semi-conscious state. She heard Medi-witches around her murmuring spells. She wanted to scream at them to not heal her, but she couldn't form the words. She groaned in both pain and frustration.
How did she get here?
No, not at the Hogwarts Hospital Wing: she knew the smell even if she were on the brink of death.
How did she make the transition from the brightest witch of her age, war heroine to the mess she had been for the last year?
She wanted to die. She had lost many; she had pushed the rest away.
As if he could hear her thoughts, he declared, "Granger, you had better not die! I ruined my best dress robes to save you."
Madame Pomfrey growled at him, "Get out. Professor Malfoy!"
On the fifth day of a magically induced sleep, she awoke to someone singing to her. "When all hope is gone, I know that you can carry on."
She slightly opened her left eye to watch him. With his eyes closed, he rested his elbows on his thighs; his pointed chin in his hands. She dismissed the thought that he looked incredibly sad, but handsome.
She cleared her throat to talk. The words came out gargled. Her throat hurt. "I never thought I'd hear Draco Malfoy singing a muggle song."
His grey eyes quickly opened as he grinned. "Eh, that lead singer is a wizard in hiding if I ever saw one. I blame my ex-girlfriend."
They were silent for several moments until Hermione tried to sit up in the bed. "Let me assist you."
Bitterly, she snapped at him. "I think you've assisted me enough."
"Granger, I cannot fathom the hurt you feel, but you are not alone. I couldn't allow you to throw yourself from the Astronomy Tower. When did you take the poison?"
"Why did you call me a Mudblood? I thought we'd grown past the prejudice."
"I noticed that all fight in you was gone. I wanted you to fight me, fight for you, fight for..."
"For us?"
"Yes."
