Chapter 1

It was another sunny day in paradise for Freshmen Riley Matthews...

"Riley!" yelled a loud voice from behind. The voice came from a short blonde wearing an over-sized football jersey, running toward the brunette.

"Maya, I'm surprised to see you here at school so early", said Riley in a sarcastic tone. "You were with him again weren't you?", Riley said noticing the jersey.

"Maybe I was," said Maya holding her hands behind her back and smiling sheepishly.

Riley laughed, casually sliding some books into her best friend's arms, knowing that she didn't have them. She had become used to the fact that her best friend was dating a mystery guy that was two years older and had his own car. She would often sneak out and stay at his house when his parents weren't home. She and Maya had developed a system where they do what they want, and the other can ask at least one freshmen year of high school was coming to an end. Riley was somewhat sad about it, but Maya, who was a lot looser than Riley, was looking forward to going to more parties and not being considered "fresh meat" for the next school year. "So, what did you two do last night?" Riley wasn't really curious, but she knew her friend wanted so badly to be asked the question.

"Well, we just talked about us for a while, then I fell asleep at his place." Maya made googly eyes and smiled from ear to ear, all while her best friend watched in disgust. "He woke me up early for breakfast and let me borrow this jersey," Maya said remembering the events from the night before. "Riles, when are you gonna join the dating train, don't you at least want a summer fling?" said a now love struck Maya.

Riley smiled at her blonde friend. "Maya, I don't need a boyfriend, besides, the boy that I do like doesn't even know that I exist," Riley said looking across the hall at a boy surrounded by a group of jocks and cheerleaders. His name was Charlie Gardner and he was extremely popular at the school, being the star quarter back and a rookie on the football team. "To add on to that, no boy would be dumb enough to ask me on a date, let alone even look at me." Just then, Riley was surprised to see her other friends, Farkle, Smackle, and Zay, reading a book labeled "Science" together on a bench. Farkle then looked up at the girls, waved, and went back to reading the book.

"Wow Zay, I didn't even know that you could read," said Maya, as she and Riley approached the trio.

"Neither did I, but Farkle and Smackle here, told me that we had a test today, so they are helping me study last minute," said a frantic Zay.

As the bell rang, Riley stated, "We should all get to class guys." As Zay and Maya groaned, they headed off to class together. The day went on as usual only lunch was a bit unusual...
