"Just shut up! SHUT UP!" Dean screamed at his younger brother, his anger harshening his tone. It would probably make pretty much every other person in the world back off but not the one it was addressed to. Sam knew Dean would never physically hurt him, not him. But perhaps he was wrong.

"I said SHUT UP!" the older sibling snapped after hearing his brother's smartass remark. Ten minutes later Dean wouldn't even remember what they had been fighting about. But at that moment he was out of control, he wasn't thinking straight.

The way his fist found his brothers jaw with a sickening sound only served to prove that further.

Dean blinked once… twice… and only then did he realize what had had done. He stared at his fallen sibling in shock, eyes wide and mouth gapping. Sam was on the ground, one hand holding himself up, the other clutching his hurt jaw. Dean's heart filled with regret when his brother's too expressive eyes turned to him, a mixture of anger and betrayal more than apparent in them.

Neither of them said a thing. They just stared at each other for a moment before Dean hesitantly offered Sam a hand. The young boy didn't accept it, though. The stubborn sixteen-year-old slowly pushed himself up and walked towards their room in the crappy motel they were currently staying at, completely ignoring his big brother in the process.

Sam was right at the door when Dean finally found his voice. "Sammy, I'm so…" Pissed off as he was, he shut the door behind him with a loud bang. He didn't have a chance to see the guilt-ridden face of his brother.

Dean didn't walk in right away. He knew Sam needed some space at the moment and he needed some time to think himself. What in the world was going through his mind? He had hit his own brother! The person he had sworn to protect ever since he was four. And just how was he supposed to fix this? Sam's trust had been betrayed in the worst possible way… Now what was Dean supposed to do…?

Sam had locked himself up in his and Dean's room. He was biting his lip like crazy, causing it to bleed. But it was the only way to stop himself from crying. And Sam wouldn't cry, he couldn't. Sam was a Winchester and Winchesters just didn't. cry.

His brother had hit him. His brother had hit him. Dean, the person who he trusted with his life, the person who always took the pain away… He took it away, he never brought it! Sure, Sam had been extra grumpy the past few days and his fights with his dad had been getting more frequent and kept on escalating… But he and Dean were fine… They were fine…

Sam had dozed off when he heard a light knock on the door. "Sammy… Open up, bro. I need to talk to you…" He didn't want to open the door. But it was his brother's room as well…

"It's Sam", he growled once he was face to face with Dean. That was all he said, though and immediately went back to his bed, a schoolbook opened in front of him. Sam just couldn't wait to get away from it all… his father's orders, the way they moving around all the time, the hunts…

Would his brother even care if he left?

Dean must have apologized to Sam about a hundred times that night. But something had broken between the brothers… A frail part of their bond, of their trust… And it could turn out to be permanent…

And Sam just couldn't wait to go to college…
