In the year 2012, the instability of the Earth was finally realized. The old Mayan prophecy actually held a bit of truth. Violent tremors shook the Earth. Entire species disappeared. Humans feared they would be next. And they finally knew why.
The one celestial being that could save them, their one hope, had disappeared.
Its presence in outer space had always been relied upon. It orbited the Earth constantly, at nearly light-speed. It kept the planet rotating on its axis; it created stability. The first footage of it had been captured in the previous year, but its true nature was kept secret by government. The film was leaked, but it was assumed a hoax. But now, in Earth's darkest hour, the origin of the footage was revealed, and a team of astronauts was sent out to the far reaches of the galaxy to find the being.
Captain Anna Johnson was often deemed insane, but she was firm in her convictions, and no one had ever tried to tell her otherwise. Which is why she was the first to volunteer for the mission that would save mankind. Her handful of crew members was mainly there because, though they would never admit it, they were too intimidated by her to refuse.
The captain paced along the deck of the starship Jumping Bean, whose name had often been laughed at (but never in Anna's earshot), glaring at random bridge officers until they scurried away. The expitition had been going on for three months, and they had still found no trace of the creature. Anna had a firm belief in the being, unlike so many others, but this was the first time she had ever doubted herself. What if-
Just then, there was a loud blaring from the alarms.
Anna whipped around to seek out the closest person, who happened to be a young officer named O'Sheen, and advanced on him, cursing. "I didn't do it!" he said in a terrified yell, backing up as he spoke. "The sensors must have picked up-"
That was all he got to say before Anna raced away to the controls and turned on the outside monitors.
The blaring stopped, and a familiar song began to play through the speakers, faint at first, but slowly becoming clearer. Anna smiled, a growing smile, and then she laughed. She had done it. She had saved her planet. She had found the being she had always known existed.
She walked over to the window, and watched, and listened.
"Nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan..."
